Waiting "in line" or "on line"?

So lets say you go somewhere and there is a line of people wating for service and you line up with everyone else to wait your turn.  Would you say that you are 'waiting in line' or that you are 'waiting on line'?

Myself, I would say that I am waiting in line.  But I have had this argument with others, mostly folks from the East coast of the US.  They insist that I should say I am waiting on line.  But that is just stupid if you ask me.

The way I see it, I am standing in a line of people.  I am not standing on the people, I am actually part of that line.  I am in line.  There is no literal line on which to stand.  And even if there was (say the DMV for example) then you could argue that I am literally standing on a line.  But even if there is a line painted on the ground I would still have no reason to stand on it if no one else was there.  Instead I would just walk to the window.  So once again, even if there is a line painted on the ground there still must be other people there for me to justify standing on it.  And once again I am in a line of people.

So you see, it just makes more sense to say that you are 'standing in line'.  And if you say it the other way you are just a silly person! :tongue:

Yes it makes sense to say you're standing in line. I never heard anyone say standing on line. Crazy east coasters.

I have never once heard "on line" used in that sense, either. Those people must've been fucking with you.

If you were standing with other people on an actual line then you would be "waiting in line on a line".

Duh yourself bucko :smile:, I'm waiting on you to figure out that it is as I said. maybe not correct queens english but accepted slang unlike to use first mentioned in the thread. When I am in line I am waiting on everyone in front of me to be helped first. Correct english would be to use the word for instead but  ya know.
