Identification needed. Dragonfruit?
    #21465860 -

I've just received this new cactus because the original owner said it kept getting spikes in her hands taking care of it and she knows about my massive cactus collection and decided to give it to me.

The larger one she's had for about 2 years and the smaller one is just a cutting she made recently. she says she has no clue what they are and she said she's never seen it flower or fruit but I'm pretty sure it's a dragon fruit plant.

What do you guys think?

Should these be propped up with a stake? I'm kinda afraid to do so because of the possibility of breaking the stems off.

What do you guys think?

I also have a shit ton of dragonfruit growing from seed but I don't really know what would be best to do with them:justdontknow:

What do you guys think would be best?

Let them grow like they are in the humidity chamber until their large enough to transplant?

Or should I start transferring to separate pots after acclimatizing to normal humidity?

I also have some trichs growing next to them so I would like to know what would be best.

No not to any sort of species level. I have grown some of these from seed collected from fruits in stores here, and bought some astro grafts on hylo, but I don't really grow it beyond that. Our climate isn't the most suited and I don't heat my greenhouse.

Some strains are self fertile, some are self sterile.
I think they have to reach a fair size before you see flowers.

I'm not sure do I have read about dragonfruit or some other cactus plant. I don't even know what exactly dragonfruit named cactus is. It may have totally different name in my language as well.

I have adviced to keep some succulent plants (from tropics) in small pots so when they have "full root space" it's most likely they flower. But I am not sure what species that advice was given to. I just remember one vendor I have known years and so on, said me few of these kind of plants will flower after pot is full of roots.

This might be about those christmas-cactus type plant flowering trick. Still person have propagate and grow them long time and said that. I am not sure can this be used to dragonfruit plant.

I seriously need to google what latin name dragonfruit plant have. Since here are very much "named cactus plants" around small nurseries and people and botanists here. Back in the day when peyote have got it's name in our language, it's been called "poison cactus" if translated directly to my language.

I might be wrong and confuse dragonfruit name to some other species or something.. so this is just quessing.

I just followed your info and looked it up online to find some more info on it and from what I've found I think this is a bit different from the others I've found pictured online. The ribs seem to be shaped differently and mine has some pretty serious glochids whereas the ones I saw pictured online just now don't seem to have that:justdontknow:

If anyone has any ideas what this plant is let me know please.

The different varieties of dragon fruit have (significantly) different appearances in the ribs and glochids.  I have seen most varieties of what is grown commercially and I have never seen one that has those thin needle-like glochids that yours have.  If I had to guess I would say it's not a dragon fruit.

Everything I have done is outdoors planted in the ground though.  And I've worked with mature plants and cuttings, not seedlings.

Well so far my dragonfruit seedlings are growing beautifully and look just like the older plants I have so I'm sure they're dragonfruit of some kind atm.

The seedlings are about 5 to 6in tall and growing quickly. I plan to work on grafting a couple for shits n giggles and to see how they grow even faster:wink:

How long did it take to get your seedlings up to 5' high?  (time from sowing seed to now)

Naw dude 5 to 6 inches tall. It took on their own roots about 2 and a half months or maybe just a lil less under nothing but grow lights and near constant moist soil.

Hey, IL, just to try to clear up confusion, "Dragon fruit" is reffering to the Hylocereus genus. They make a fruit that looks like this:

(Sorry about the huge pic, couldn't figure out how to resize)

But, yes spaceman. It looks much like a dragonfruit to me. Mine are about that size and I believe yours look almost exactly like mine. I'll try to get a pic up tomorrow of mine that were seed started and about that size for you to compare...

One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'
