Need a Cactus ID
    #1272500 - 02/03/03 02:46 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

well i went to the local Lowes yesterday and bought a small pot with 3 cacti in it... the cacti weren't labeled and the worker wasn't sure of the species either... i was looking for san pedro or peruvian torch (which i don't think these are).. i'm hoping there's some hallucinogenic properties in these cacti so if anyone can help me out, it would be appreciated.

the taller of the two has 5 main sections(?) and is blueing at the top.. the spines are a tan-orange and about a centimeter long.. this is the cacti i picked out thinking it looked the closest to san pedro or of the Trichocereus family.

the second, the small spherical one i think i have identified as " Mammillaria heyderii (Witculiki, Wichu-ri-ki) " thanks to erowid's image vault - though mine's just a baby it looks just like this, with the purple tipped spines and pyramid shaped parts of the cactus sticking out(from which the spines are coming from) http://www.erowid.org/plants/show_image.php?image=cacti/mammillaria_heyderii1.jpg

does it look like either of my cacti are hallucinogenic? any info on these would be appreciated as i haven't found much in my searches

The one thought to resemble a trich is definitely not a trich, ribs are too long. I'm currently at a loss for the name of it, however it is a very common columnar cactus sold all the time at all those home deee-pot type stores. If i remember it, or remember to remember to post it once i remember i'll post the name unless someone beats me to it.

thanks, i'm still on the lookout for a san pedro ... and does it look like my smaller cactus is the one in the link? if so i've found that it's mildly psychotropic

I've found several trichocerus cacti at wal-mart. you gotta know what you're looking for though.

If you want a good San Pedro, order one from a company called The Basement Shaman. I got one a month ago and its grown about 5" under 4, 48inch fluorescents. And I go to MSU and its damn cold up here for cacti to be growing anyway!
