HIDDEN Contamn Discussion -EDIT pic of master
    #21604350 -

I feel like I'm not the only person with this problem.
Would love for our TRUSTED CULTIVATORS
to jump in on this thread for all us n00bs
I've been battling a hidden contam for over a year now,
and I'm not 100% convinced it IS my spawn.

My goal with this thread is to be able to diagnose
EXACTLY where HIDDEN CONTAMNS are coming from.

My master agar culture is a beautiful 2-d plane of mycelium.
My grain jars are prepped as per Frank or RR
My substrate is pasteurized
All clean work is done in a SAB with 10% BLEACH and 70% Iso
My control grain jars never contam
My control agar plates never contam
My control grain on agar never contams

This is basic info regurgitated on the forums.

* COIR DOES NOT GERMINATE MOLD SPORES

* Contamns only come from BAD SPAWN

So here are my basic questions:

- If my spawn is clean, and my bulk coir substrate is pasteurized, how does mold grow after the FIRST flush?

- Is there ANY possible way that a contaminant can FALL IN during spawning and take hold of a coir substrate?

- Why would the spots where I've harvested (by cutting at the base) after the first flush be the first place that green mold appears?

- How could a clean oyster jar from a vendor and clean bag of pasteurized substrate from a vendor become moldy in 9 days after spawning?

- Has anyone noticed an increase in contamn issues in parts of the country with HIGH POLLEN counts?  Say, the South...  Is the mold germinating on the pollen on the coir?

- What affect does bacteria play on getting green mold?

- If my spawn jar is clean, will letting it sit for longer periods of time (2-3 weeks) before spawning somehow effect the outcome?  How could a clean jar sitting longer somehow produce a mold?

- If my pasteurized substrate sits for 2-3 weeks before use, can it harbor contamns and mess up my spawn run?

Anyone care to trouble shoot this, or post links that are pertinent?

Maybe ask some of your own questions on HOW this is happening.

I don't know much about coir but I've heard it's so contamination resistant people can use it with just sterilizing it.

Mushies seem pretty contaminant prone until after the first flush. I also don't dunk until after flush 2 on bulk subs because they hold so much water. Makes them last longer. Just a good misting is what I do.

That's what is messing me up.  Because my cultures look beautiful on agar.

I can't figure out why in one part of the country I can grow amazing, doing the same procedure.

A+B should ALWAYS = C

but right now its now.  and I'm losing my mind over it :/:confused:

It is possible to get contams when spawning...it's not always from the spawn itself. Did you move recently? If your environment is dirtier than your last, then that may be contributing.

So here are my basic questions:

- If my spawn is clean, and my bulk coir substrate is pasteurized, how does mold grow after the FIRST flush?
Parts of the mycelium weaken after its goal has been achieved.(colonize, feed, reproduce, end)

- Is there ANY possible way that a contaminant can FALL IN during spawning and take hold of a coir substrate?
Yes, I do believe.

- Why would the spots where I've harvested (by cutting at the base) after the first flush be the first place that green mold appears?
The damaged organism is weakest at that point. Remeber, your whole tub is one organism until mold pops up, then it's a battle between 2.

- How could a clean oyster jar from a vendor and clean bag of pasteurized substrate from a vendor become moldy in 9 days after spawning?
Have you ever tested your air quality wherever your fruiting/spawning? Wave a Petri around open air and seal it. Count the days it takes to germinate. Then keep track of different colonies and colors.

- Has anyone noticed an increase in contamn issues in parts of the country with HIGH POLLEN counts?  Say, the South...  Is the mold germinating on the pollen on the coir?
On the pollen on the coir? You mean pollen that was on the coconut before processing and made it all the way through processing? Or thru the spawning process?  Cori bricks are formed using over a ton of force and really high heat. Some companies will add molds for beneficial plant growth. Be careful about that.

- What affect does bacteria play on getting green mold?
Uhhh... I'll take stab at it. The bacteria colony will weaken a part of the organism, therefore making it easier for a competing mold to take hold.

- If my spawn jar is clean, will letting it sit for longer periods of time (2-3 weeks) before spawning somehow effect the outcome?  How could a clean jar sitting longer somehow produce a mold?
When a colonized jar is left to over colonize it feeds on the grains, literally squeezing them. You can see some stone jars with standing water because they have squeezed it out of the grains. This standing water can then allow bacteria colonies to form.

- If my pasteurized substrate sits for 2-3 weeks before use, can it harbor contamns and mess up my spawn run?
Depending on storage method, possibly. But re pasteurizing never hurts

Anyone care to trouble shoot this, or post links that are pertinent?
those are my hypotheses. They may or may not hold up to scrutiny. Take em with a grain of doubt until confirmed.

Maybe ask some of your own questions on HOW this is happening.

I did move last year.  HIGH HIGH pollen counts now.  Been having the issue with mold since I moved.

Like I said

A+B=C  before

NOW

A+B= Fuck my life

I have a theory that the mold spores are geminating on the pollen that lands on my coir substrate during spawning

But I have no facts to back this up

Pollen and mold spores are roughly the same size I believe... I'll Google it. But pollen probably does have the required elements to sustain a fungus.

I feel like they are attaching to each other in the air, then the mold can germinate on the actual pollen.  I had tried to google this, but couldn't find my answer.

Just that mold counts and pollen counts are high at the same time of year

Are you living in a different area with moist air and possibly high mold count. Spring is here... Coir does and eventually contaminates after a few flushes. Esp trich but usually its thrown out before esp. after numerous mistings, and weakening mycellium. When does the infection start and is it from un colonised parts of the casing or from the substrate itself?  Have you changed ANYTHING like your brand of coir, grain , grow space or substrate. Im thinking its not your slants... You Just have to pinpoint the issue, its looking like the substrate is the problem. Try sterilizing the coir. I havent ever had issues going this route, it could be something allready in the coir. Or try a new brand. Could be a bad batch. Im sure its your substrate if everything you have up to this point isnt showing issues of any kind. Good luck and hopefully you can find the issue is causing your problems.

I moved to the deep south (america)  since then, I'm having problems

I had some GT prints I cleaned up on agar.  They looked great.  Ran them on grains. Did fine.  Put them on coir (same brand I've always used) and I got green before the first flush.    Two different tubs from two different GT plates as masters.

My clones had been fruiting even tho they contam before first flush, but I think it was because the clones were very strong that they even fruited.

I've literally lost 15 tubs since December.

I'm just trying to figure out if the contam is in fact coming from my air when I spawn.

Sounds like it to me and it sounds like you know it too. The sad thing is with trich you can never be too clean. If you spawn in a clean still (or as still as possible) environment you should see reduced problems. I've heard of members having to bleach the walls floors and roof and run an air purifier and shit. Apparently worked really great.

great info.  didn't realize that humans affected the mold count by just being in a room

I've done the bleach bomb 2 months ago.  It sucked lol.

Well, I really feel like the contam is coming from the air.  But people would say that's crazy tho.

It must be the spawn

piggy backing mold can be a tricky fucking bitch to deal with, i would start over on agar again doing some control tests along the way levaign jars uninoculated, pasturized subs not inoculated and what not and maybe even switch up your bulk sub but even RR has seen molds stay dormant through g2g transfers and not show there face till ya get to bulk

Hey Cron!  Very familliar with Franks thread

I just can't seem to get good harvests down here.

I'm doing the exact same process I used to... I would even say more careful.

I really can't believe that I am not able to produce a clean culture from a print.  I seriously can not be that fucking retarded... :lmafo:

I'm about to run this set of master jars, then spawn them to 50/50 coir/manure.  Then I'll properly pasteurize in the OVEN like eatyou does...

I'm really hoping I have this culture clean now.  Just trying to go through every single possibility...  seriously, going crazy

oh i know your familiar with franks thread but i posted it for everyone else to see:lol:
but even if ya fucked up your pasturizing with something like manure you would likely see full colonization of the substrate and a flush before molds kicked in

Good call.  Sorry. LOL

my tubs wouldn't fully colonize when I ran the GT from MS.  Only my KSSS clones would almost make it, then fruit.  Its weird to have the same contam from different cultures.

My trays last week did great.  They were the culture I cleaned up, like Frank did.

From reading his post, I assume that he was able to catch the culprit with his eye.

I've just been concerned about the Pollen thing.  Hold on, this dude just messaged me this

Quote:
I have a growing buddy in Florida who deals with pollen. He told me that he changed from coir to peat and pasteurized longer and found that to be beneficial. Also used soil as an added component to the peat anything microbe is always good at keeping things at bay.

So I'm thinking that adding the manure will help???

yes manure may help out or straw/grass clippings or whatever unless the piggybacking mold is already germinated, a pasturized sub can fend off mold spores but mycleium will just eat through it
