Good commercial soil for peyote

Do most growers prepare their own soil, or are there any good commercially available soils I can use? I'm growing from seed. Should I use a specific soil for developing the seedlings, or can I just use the same I would with an adult? I've been growing various trichocereus cacti for years, and want to expand my horizons to peyote.

I make my own but you can use a seed starter mix and cut it with 50% coconut coir. It's been hard to find this spring but I'm sure it's out there somewhere.

I would ask from nursery if you are going to buy first peyote plant about that growing medium.

Or just get rocks and perlite and coco coir, mix the up and plant cactus with them. Make sure coco coir isn't fertilized.

Those "bricks" are good. You can water them.. They swollen very much and dry it a while, then use as growing medium. So far I've noticed when obtaining already old peyote.. Its better to ask what grow medium it's been spent time and how long.

Pure perlite is one choice but non-fertile coco coir with perlite and chunks of rocks will do and no matter is peyote plant taken from poor or fertilizer rich substrate.

From strong fertilizer soil moved cactus to non-fertile soil doesn't seem to cause shock and make cactus target of spider mites.

Those bugs will eventually arrive your garden so you would not want to do is plant peyote (spent years in rocky substrate) to fertilizer rich soil. Ferts will burn skin as well as plant comes easy target to spider mites.

All lophophora I have planted to fertilizer rich soil have been targeted by spider mites and somoe of them have got burns to skin.

It's better ask about do your nursery keep peyote on mineral grow medium or not. So far no spider mites have been targeted those plants with no fertilizers in grow medium mix.

I tested coco coir for cannabis with grow season fertilizers and planted lophophora with 50/50 rocks and coco coir (with ferts) and all plants have shitloads of mites. Those I have planted to fertilizer free coco coir and rocks haven't got targeted by spider mites, or very less if they are near bad injured plant.

As rule of thumb: never move old peyote cactus to rich soil if it's not been in rich soil before. It will be easy target to spider mites and especially at case of overdose of fertilizers, mites seems to sense stressing plant.

Ask your nursery what grow medium they use, then use same/similar. Pure non fertile 100% coco coir do as well as grow medium to your new cactus. But I suggest to mix rocks with it to make it a bit mineral rich grow medium.

Lophophora can be grown from seed in very very rich soil without problems. I tested By sowin seeds to 100% coco coir with lots of fertilizers, no problems. But moving old plant suddenly to fertilized soil have so far caused problems

well nursery I have been dealing with never use organic stuff in grow medium, only rocks and big grain sand, they always shock if planted to fertilized soil. Get's very easy spider mite targets after fertilizer burns/shock.

Just my observations, all lophs I have obtained trough mid/north-EU nuseries have shocked from fertilized soil.. Never shocked when using 50/50% coco/rocks.. Sometimes I have 20-40% coco coir only. Those plants do not have been easy targets to spider mites than those planted to rich soil.

Nursery I have got plants keep them in rocks. To make sure, you shuld ask from nursery about what is proper growing medium not to shock plant and ruin the appearance of it. Mites like to target those overdose fertilized plants. And nitrogen is toxic as high levels so if peyote cactus isn't grown in high nitrogen soil in nursery constantly. They are very prone to Nitrogen in soil and shock easy.. Especially older peyote plants you don't want ruin their appearance by using rich soil if plant haven't been in rich soil before.

Start from grow medium mix Ferrel suggest. Non-fertile coco coir and perlite+rocks or something. Those does not seem to shock if rock minerals change suddenly but most old ones are really prone to suddenly fertile soil.

I don't know where you are going to buy your plant but ask nursery about what grow medium older peyote have been in.. To avoid possible shock and later on spider mite targetting, use non-fertilized grow medium and later on give fertilizers via watering if need.

Some nurseries may give free small bag of their grow medium and you can use it. It's small amount of rocks/sand and postage will not be so much because small amount of grow medium. It's not suggested to plant peyote to too wide pot as well. I'd say diameter of pot can be littlebit bigger than cactus you have.. Maybe 1/3rd more diameter of pot than button.

More button cactus you plant to same pot, more drinkers there are and therefore it works. I have small buttons in "big" pot but 3 of them so they will drink soil dry before moisture around starts to rot the plant.

I should have added if you have access to pumice it's highly superior to perlite. I wish I knew a place that had it around here. I'd chuck that perlite to never be seen but it's almost needed when making a light soil.

pumice works well with coco.:thumbup: (I bought is as "Volcanic rock")

It can be grinded as well in to coco coir. But it's plausible to do "ground" for seedling swollen up as moist and shrink when drying. Soil behaves like a lophophora plant but more rapidly. I use perlite with pumice as "rocks" also in the mix are some mixed rocks as well.

Make sure you don't get the Miracle Grow Perlite with plant food mixed in!
This shit has turned all my plants an ugly yellow color,every last one of them:facepalm:
And as a matter of fact it's the same color as the bag itself:thumbdown:

Well,I over did mine,and used way more perlite than need be:lol:
That could be why mine got a little too much.
I actually meant to get regular old perlite,but I made a mistake:facepalm:

I buy perlite in 4 cu. ft. bags (huge) in horticultural grade from farm/nursery supply stores.

I wish I could source bulk perlite locally, all I can find is the 9 liter bags around here and the cost adds up. For peyote I usually use a mix of perlite, sand, and Turface or diatomaceous earth gravel. I tried pure perlite at one point and I found it a nightmare, just floats away too easily.

My Trichocereus are fine,it's my leafy plants that didn't like it.
They all have this ugly pale yellow color to them ,and only got it after I re-potted them all using the perlite.
Lophohora would probably be fine too,I was just stating that it probably be best to use the regular perlite to be on the safe side.
