Would a galaxy s3 run well on a custom lollipop rom?
    #21443146 -

Have never rooted an android but want to root my s3, t999L. Google does not support webkit in android versions below 4.4. My s3 will not go beyond 4.3 so I want to put a secure custom rom on it.

I also want to get rid of the samsung's bloat apps. I like the samsung SKIN, particularly the drop down quick settings because I hate two finger swipe, but not all the bloat apps running in the background consuming ram and battery power.

Do you think the specs of the s3 T999L version can handle lollipop?

Source:  Google drops support for 4.3 and lower.

If it's anything like an iPhone, as long as you are able to successfully reflash your existing fw with a custom rom, it should work. You might not be able to use certain new features of the new fw if the s3's hardware doesn't support it and it might make your shit slow(er).

You'll need to research a ROM that will work on your S3.  As long as that ROM is Lollipop and meant for your specific device, it will work great.  You'll wish you did it sooner.  All versions of Android are ported over to work smoothly on almost all devices, despite age.  I have a Galaxy S1 running Android 4.4 smooth and works great.
Couple of older Nexus devices running that as well.
The downside is that you have devs porting the ROM over to an older device, so that means they create and slowly work out bugs over time.  A good developer will have a stable ROM.  Last time I looked, the LP ROMs weren't quite stable enough for everyday use on the devices not running LP from the factory, but it's been a month or so.

Generally, first you install a custom recovery like TWRP, then you use that custom recovery to root the device with a .zip file, check root on the device before you do anything else.  Install Titanium Backup and back up all the apps you want, but never system files (unless you know exactl what you're doing) and then use TWRP to do a full system backup.  May even want to transfer all the backups from TiBu and TWRP to your computer for redundancy.  Don't skip this step, trust me, especially if you're not experienced working on Androids.  I've messed with a LOT of phones and I do backups like it's going out of style and it's saved me shit more than a few times.  Then you wipe and install the custom ROM in the recovery, reboot and install TiBu again then restore all your apps and you're good to go.  Some devices have a couple extra steps.  IIRC, the S3 will need a new bootloader to run 4.4 and up but double check that...

Can I use an app like "file expert" from the play store to save my apps? What all needs to be backed up? My contacts and calander events are backed up on google servers, and on my nexus 5. I use my nexus 5, unrooted, as my main and only phone. I only use the s3 at home for internet use.

Does Titanium make a backup of the stock, unrooted rom that the s3 has right now?
