I love how my S2 cost me $600 in June as an upgrade after my first two years was up. T-mobile though.

I think with a two year contract extension AT&T wanted $199 for an S3. I'm excited to dip my toes in the smartphone world for the first time
What's the deal with this amazon price? What's the catch?

I think the only "catch" is the two year contract.
Isn't the S3 hitting the 4-6 month mark in terms of age? That would mean its about halfway (at least) through its life cycle, so the discount is probably appropriate for an on-contract phone of this age.

I think that the Note is going to be my next phone.

I kinda need a new phone but getting a contract is a pain and a bad idea for me :/ If did, I don't see why not get the iphone 4 now, my towns only 3g and its free with sprint and unlimited web. I'm kinda looking for a month to month texting/music phone right now though.

4 years and doesn't miss a beat. Not to mention i can toss it at anytime and not be at a loss. Service is super cheep. Has been Burned, thrown, run over, dropped, smacked, tossed from moving cars, stepped on, fallen in water, run over with a lawn mower, and so much worse.
But it works.

S1 release: June 2010 S2 release: May 2011 S3 release: May 2012
Saturday is December 2012, about 6 months into the S3 lifespan. In 6 months, the S4 will probably be out, so it seems likely they're starting to discount the S3.
Just guessing though....

I was just told by my brother that you have to sign two contracts to get the phone, much like Wal-Mart does. You sign AT&T's contract and Amazon's contract. So, say if you want to change your data plan from 5 gigs to 3 because you don't need as much and change it through AT&T, you will get a fee from Amazon for breaching their contract you signed. Something to that extent. Two contracts was the main point.
