Induction of fungal albinism?
    #21438026 -

The small number of albino and leucistic Psilocybe cubensis strains that have appeared on the market have been well received by cultivators for their novelty and, IME, favorable growth characteristics. Although albinism is generally considered a recessive trait, it is well known that APE is a third generation descendant from a PF albino x PE cross, meaning that without backcrossing to PF albino the albinism reemerged in the third generation. Additionally it seems albinism naturally emerges in P. cubensis on rare occasions.

So here are my questions: Why is albinism not encountered in other Psilocybe species and is there a way it can be reliably induced, either with mutagenic interventions (e.g., UV) or through hybridization between something like an albino P. cubensis strain and and a different Psilocybe species?

I understand interspecific hybridization is far more difficult than intraspecific hybridization.

I can't imagine in nature albino genes would be selected for.  In many cases, for animals that are not the top predators, it probably is a death sentence when camouflage is of great importance.

As for mushrooms, I could see a lack of pigmentation potentially causing harm to the organism since it has no protection from light/UV which could potentially influence the viability of its spores or the organism.  If the organism is constantly fighting to regenerate damaged tissue, perhaps it would spend less energy on its reproductive capabilities.

Just a thought.
