Times are changing. The challenges are still there, but a lot of the software development is moving to foreign countries now and it doesn't seem to matter Mich if it's Bulgaria or Bangalore if you get down to it. Both upcoming economies and established ones are learning how to work with each other and this thread is a good example of what that looks like in practice.

Op, take the ticket. Go to Bangalore, learn about modern India and use the experience.

The person I talked to on da phone said that they want us to train in India so that we can get a feeling for who we would be working with when we come back to the US.

Wasn't there a crappy TV show with a similar plotline?  Or was it that the dude was just sent to be middle management in India?  I think that was it, American white dude was middle management in an Indian call center.

I have family in Atlanta and lived in Chicago for 6 years.  I would pick Chicago over Atlanta any day. World class public transit and food.

It is a bit expensive and can get very violent.  I still have lots of friends there. Some are actually from India.  After living in India the "big" american cities will feel so small and clean.

Indeed. Chicago >>>> Atlanta any day. It's fairly easy to avoid the super violent areas if you're not a total fucking moron. Chicago is designed well enough that it's pretty much impossible to get lost if you've got even the slightest clue where you are, and the easy accessibility of CTA rails/busses makes getting around pretty effortless if you can tolerate all the crazy homeless people yelling at random passengers.

Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

You take the good with the bad. Hot as hell during the summer, cold as fuck in the winter, a whole bunch of sports teams that people care far too much about, shit roads, incredibly corrupt political system, blah blah blah.

India is great for computer software engineering and Atlanta is a major tech hot spot in the USA.

Eh, sorta. The thing with programming is it's about quality. There is a reason why programmers get paid well: It's in demand, it requires a lot of skilled knowledge and you have to provide quality work. Anybody can write a shitty algorithim, but it takes real knowledge of a language to write an algorithim that could be 100x more efficient than the current algorithim they use. I'm not bashing foreign programmers, a lot of my colleagues are of other ethnical background, but the demand for skilled labor has kept the jobs world wide, it's really hard to say that the demand has gone to foreign countries.... the demand for quality programmers is world wide.
