Just got a job offer to train in India for six weeks, then will relocate to Atlanta or Chicago.
    #20951678 -

I am trying to be a software developer and a company I applied for said they have an offer for me to train in India for six weeks.  I will then be sent to Atlanta or Chicago to work.

This is crazy.

I'm not sure what I think about this.

It would be cool to get a basically free trip to India for six weeks.

Has anybody here done anything like this before?

Sounds pretty rad. I'd love to go to India. Odds are though you'll be training and not have much chance to explore. I don't think I'd want to live in Chicago or Atlanta though.

Going to India would be a cool experience if you get some free time, but training in India just sounds weird I'd get more details about this training.

It sounds like an experience. Even if you get there and realize you hate India, it is only 6 weeks so it's not too bad.

It also depends if you have any interest in living in those areas. If you hate Chicago and Atlanta then you probably shouldn't take it

Ya this is true, I prob wouldn't have much free time.
And my first reaction is that I don't want to work in Chicago or Atlanta lol.

Is the training free and would it be contractual? If not you could go for a trip around the world and still have training to add to your resume.

Ya, it's contractual, unfortunately.
If I opted out of the job after the training then I'd probably have to pay a butt-load for the training and plane tickets and rent and all sorts of expenses.

Use the ticket to India, jump ship and join an ashram in the Himalayas.

Dude. A month and a half in a foreign country. It's gonna give you the perpective on life. Plus they survive for years down there, you'll be fine.

I guess its free training? As in they pay for your flight and housing?

If not, look at it this way. 500$ will make you live like a king for that month and a half. You're actually gonna save a lot of cash during that training thing. It's paid training too? Awww how nice.

The person I talked to on da phone said that they want us to train in India so that we can get a feeling for who we would be working with when we come back to the US.

I'd take that offer in a second.  It's a chance to really get to know a different culture, as opposed to just visiting.

I also think everyone should live in a major city at least once.  Chicago sounds cool.

I've never read of a good experience working with Indian programmers before.  Could be fun though.  I wouldn't want to live in Atlanta or Chicago though.

Why do you think everyone should live in a major city at least once?

I have family in Atlanta and lived in Chicago for 6 years.  I would pick Chicago over Atlanta any day. World class public transit and food.

It is a bit expensive and can get very violent.  I still have lots of friends there. Some are actually from India.  After living in India the "big" american cities will feel so small and clean.

I just think it's an interesting experience.

I'm not fond of city living myself, but I'm glad I took the opportunity to do it in my younger years.
