Computer help needed. (Bootable USB OS)
    #21237744 -

Evening folks. I really needed help from someone that's computer savvy here.

I have 2 laptops. One of them has a partially fried HD (A Dell Inspirion 15). I'll provide the full model number if I can find it and if necessary to answer my question.

So the Dell is able to boot up into Windows 8 but within 5-15 minutes It crashes due to a "Critical_Process_Died" error. Basically a blue screen of death.

I've heard before it's possible to boot up a PC using ony a pen drive that has Linux installed on it, if this is the case, would I be able to boot up the computer through USB even though the laptop has a partially fried HD?

Where would I download  Linux (or any other free OS) in order to do what I'm trying to? My google search returned so many websites that I didn't know where to start from.

Lastly, if I'm able to do the steps stated above to work, how do I change the BIOS (i think it's called) settings in order boot up the computer straight from the USB drive instead of from the HD?

Thank you for any help whatsoever. It will be greatly appreciated. :peace: & Thank you.

Edit: Another thing, my other laptop, the one I'm on right now (HP 15) is only a 1 Ghz, 4GB of RAM, and 500 GB Hard Disk Space slower than dirt PC. The Dell on the other hand is a 1.86 Ghz, 8GB of RAM which fakes it exponentially faster.

Is it possible to swap the Intel 1.86Ghz Dell CPU into the HP? Same question goes for the RAM.

In the bios there's a boot sequence option. Pick usb as your first.

If I remember correctly, you hold down F8 right after you turn on your computer until bios opens to access bios.

I believe it's F12 on that Dell (besides the point though). I've figured out how mess with the BIOS boot settings in the time since I posted this thread.

Do you have any answers to any of my questions?

The most important one being "is it possible to run a PC strictly from a USB Drive Operating System?"

I'm going to head off to bed so I apologize if I don't respond for a few hours, but anyone else with any tips, suggestions, and advice please keep posting.

_____________

I would like to get this done first thing in the morning tomorrow. Thanks again

I haven't the slightest clue what legacy (an OS I'm assuming) is or how to enable it.

I'm technologically retarded so any answers you guys can give me, please try to write as if you were explaining this to a 10 year old child.

It's in the Bios (f2).  It probably is already enabled, so you shouldn't worry too much. But I heard on windows 8 and on some of the newer laptops that it is not.

Here is a video I found kind of detailing how to begin setting your computer up to boot up from USB.

It starts talking about in the first 30 seconds though I haven't watched the whole thing.

It can be a pain figuring stuff out but you'll eventually get it.

Someone more knowledgeable will likely help you out tomorrow.

With no exaggeration what-so ever, I know very little.

I sometimes have trouble booting up from usb, like my computer doesn't detect that the usb is plugged in and I have to try several times.

You'll get it, and it'll feel really good once you do.

Yes as long as your bios supports it, I ran a pc with no hard  drive at all in it for quite a while on a USB drive If you add persistence to the drive you can even save stuff accross boots. Some Bios,s will also boot from an ssd card. PM me if you get stuck. Another Plus to this you can drag and drop things on the HD to yet annother USB stick. Oh btw there are dozens of live linux distros out there. A little bit different  than what you are used to looking at but having a live distro can save your ass sometimes.

Awesome. I have a spare 1gb SSD cards. I don't know if that's enough memory to hold a full OS, is it?

My USB drive is 4GB. Not even sure if that would work...What do you think?

Also from my limited research this morning I've found out there's OS' like Unbuntu as well. Is there one specific one out there that is better than the rest?

Yea some most live distros will fit on a 1G card I Think Ubuntu needs more than that but Slax, Vector live and Gparted (mainly a partitioning tool but will serve your basic needs) Transfer as much important stuff as need be before your HD dies to USB sticks. Go here and pick one that has a live release. http://www.linuxquestions.org and look up distributions under 'download linux' pick one  then just use :unetbootin: to make the stick/card

Right on. Thanks again for the info and link.

The computer that has the dying HD is on my old laptop so no worries about backing anything up. I took care of that a couple months ago.

Get this: http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-Converter-Optical-External/dp/B002OV1VJW#
Remove the bad hard drive from the laptop, use that adapter to access the drive contents on the other laptop.
Get all your files and reformat the bad drive.
Run some tests and see if its truely bad or if its just something terrible that had happened.

If you just want to use the laptop, you can burn a bootable of Debian or Ubuntu and run from the disk. A lot of older laptops don't support booting from USB.

Thanks Oggy.

I know for sure the old HD is dying because it has S.M.A.R.T technology built in and has been failing for months.
I dropped it on the floor a few times and it caused the HD to start acting up.

The only purpose I have for getting that computer running again is to have a computer in my house simply for word processing, email, and browsing the internet.

I have the second laptop (one I'm posting with right now) that's used for work, gaming, etc and it's always out and about with me. The only problem is that it's way too slow to be my primary PC. That's why I was asking in the OP if it's possible to take the faster Intel CPU from the dying one and place it in this one.

Neither laptop is old though. The faster one (older one with a bad HD) is a year old. While this one is barely 2 months old.

Probably not for the CPU, maybe for the RAM. More details would be needed to know that (for the ram, they would both need to be the same generation (e.g. DDR3) and the computer would have capacity limits per stick and overall.)

You could put the boot drive from the crappier computer into the better one if you're set on not buying any new parts, since any reasonably modern laptop is going to have a 2.5" SATA drive. This would mean reinstalling the OS and leaving the other computer disabled though. This would not be my first choice, it's nice to have a backup machine.

Or you could buy a new 2.5" boot drive for the better computer, ideally a SSD (much better performance, and not really vulnerable to physical shock like a mechanical drive). Always operating the newer computer with a USB drive sticking out of it seems annoying, and the performance probably won't be great either unless it was a fast USB 3.0 drive (which it probably isn't) and the computer supported USB 3.0 (which it may).

ive had a failed HDD from my old HP pavilion laptop. I lost all my data

if u descide to get a new HDD, get a high-quality Solid State Drive (SSD) With at least 16GB for your OS. If your laptops only take one HDD, get a 128GB SSD and u will be good for basic data saving and OS running. SSD drives are basically bomb-proof, so reliable. Best money ive ever spent

And u can install Windows 8 on a USB flash drive, but it needs at least a 16GB, and it has to be high-speed type, not the cheap generic ones.

If u have a desktop (or a friend with one), i suggest extracting your HDD from your laaptop, and find a laptop HDD USB interface and connect it to your PC. Then you could access your files and copy/paste your files to the desktop.

Thank you so much psi. This is exactly the information I was looking for.

Both computers use DDR 3 Ram so I might be able switch it out like you said. It's too bad I can't switch out CPU's. The 1.86GHZ intel is so much faster and more reliable than this AMD 1.0Ghz but I'll live with it.

I just got done creating a bootable USB with the Slax (Unbuntu) OS.

The only problem I'm still having is figuring out how to boot straight from the USB. In theory I know what to do in BIOS settings but I don't see anywhere in there that gives me boot options for doing so. Even under the "Boot" tab in BIOS. :strokebeard:

I wish I could take a screenshot in BIOS, but I don't think that's possible. Maybe I can change the settings by going into the "Dell Options and Recovery" on startup and go from there? I haven't given that a shot yet.

@LogicalChaos: Thank you as well for your post. I'm not planning on buying a new HDD for now as I have an old 100 GB external HD I'll be using with the USB booted machine to store any documents or programs.

I'll consider buying an SSD eventually for my primary machine as I am very rough with my laptops due to the conditions while at work.

Maybe take a picture of the screen with your phone? Boot order should be on there somewhere.

If one CPU is AMD and the other is Intel then definitely there is no chance of swapping CPUs.

SSDs are a lot cheaper than they used to be, I got a 250 GB Samsung last summer for about $150.

If the 100 GB external drive has a SATA drive inside (there's a good chance of this but it may be IDE or possibly native USB instead) then you could take it out and use it as an internal drive.

Haha I should have thought of that. I'll take a pic with my phone and post here so I can show you in just a few minutes.

Will you be online here for a little bit? I'm going to grab some lunch real quick but I'm sure I'm gonna have a few more questions for you.

Especially now that you mentioned I can possibly use the external drive as an internal one.
