Wet spots on Mycelium (pf tek)
    #2123560 - 11/19/03 06:18 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

There are large wet spots that are collecting right on the healthy mycelium in my brf jars.
Since the water looks clear, i am assuming that it isn't myc piss or contamination, but am wondering if i should open the lids to the jars somewhat to let the humidity level lower some?

I have tried to search the sight/forums but haven't found info specific to this.

This is my first attempt at cultivation. Most of the jars have become contaminated with what i can only guess to be a bacteria of some sort, so with these three jars that seem clean i haven't even removed the tape over the holes through fear of cross contamination.

I've moved the bad jars away of course, so is it alright if i loosen the lids, or at least take of the tape, or is this soggyness a normal thing?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I tried to take some pics with my digital (for this purpose and to show pictures of the ugly orange speckles in the contamination forum)but the resolution was just too crappy for any clarity of the image.

I don't have filters here(drink instant- it's the lazyman's way!)
Maybe i could use paper towels instead?

Does it look like wet spots or water droplets (like condensation)?

I'd say they're large spots of water droplets that are right where the heaviest colonization has occured.

It seemed like condensation at first, but now that the jars are around 65-75% colonized, that moisture looks alot more like drops of water directly on my fuzzy myc friends...

if that's what you are seeing, don't sweat it. my bud's jars are doing the same, but it may help speed up the colonization rate if you let those jars breathe

let 'em breathe, yes...

and folks... i seriously recommend not even using the PF tek. it is slow and problematic.

get a pressure cooker, get some birdseed, and make pint jars of birdseed. you can fruit them as cakes if you want. they colonize in half the time as PF substrate, don't have these kinds of problems, are easier to make, and grow more mush. the only drawback is that you need a PC.

ahh yes! The dampness looks much similar, minus the heavy colonization.

Many thanks for all the advice.

Sadly, I've found more of that damned contamination on one of my last 3(out of 10 that were innoculated) clean jars... :frown:

I think i'll have to make a post in the contamination forum soon to try and figure out what exactly it is so that i can prevent this from happening the next time around, cus i'm not giving up!

But i think i will try and vent the jars some, and just see if these last two make it through... :/
