Trying to keep one that stays small enough to not eat rats may be tough. I'm not actually sure what kind there are out there with those requirements for a snake. I have a 5 and a half foot python that I feed rats, so I'm really no help to you  I'm not sure how large corn snakes or milk snakes get. They may be an option for you.

I've had Brazilian Red Rainbow Boas, male and female, and a massive male Boa C. Constrictor called Twiztid. Lovely pets. Shouldn't be aggressive at all if you handle them frequently and with care.

I once had a little snake but it escaped in my house!

The wife was none too happy about that.

I guess the definition of "small" should be clarified.

Heheh. Well, they're no Tiger Pythons or Constrictors.

I don't mind the size though... My constrictor was the friendliest reptile I've had, and it was gigantic. Never bit.

Del, if you're serious, the best starter snake is a cornsnake. Nowadays they come in all kinds of funky colors, are easy to keep, and eat mice for their entire life. They are also very docile and rarely, if ever, show aggression. Do some research about their requirements though and have it's enclosure set up BEFORE you get it. I kept and bred snakes for years so I can give you advice if you need it.

 I almost bought a pair of Texas rat snakes once, but they were way to aggressive and mean! There was blood smeared on the inside of the holding tank from when they were fed (from thrashing the rats around). They were a tad too viscious for me.

Such snakes usually are. Corn snakes and so on.
Plus they got pretty big teeth as opposed to the suffocators.

I think Del would be better suited to a nice friendly boa if she could get over the feeding it rats thing. It kinda takes the fun out of having a pet snake, if you can't handle it without being attacked and bitten

You kinda have to though. The only alternative is something like a garter snake which eats frogs and fish and I can tell you from experience that snakes with this diet are messy and smelly. A big myth about pet snakes is that their food needs to be live which it doesn't. Just buy frozen mice from the pet store then thaw a couple out and throw them in and they'll eat them. Plus, don't forget, an adult cornsnake will only need to be fed once every couple of weeks.
