Thanks everyone for you extremely helpful posts. Right now I'm thinking either a king, corn, red tail, or spotted python. Leaning slightly towards the king at the moment.
Plan on checking out the local pet stores / expos and try to get as much hands on time with these species as possible. After that hopefully I have a better understanding of exactly what I want.
Great thread so far, anyone got some more pics of their pet snakes?

Here's some pics of my old Pueblan milksnake:

Unfortunately, he escaped. I had some field guides on the screened lid, but the fucker was strong enough to push them off and vanish. Pretty sure he's dead now. Locking lids are a must for snakes.

That sucks man, shame to loose such a gorgeous snake. BTW though, how are the milk snakes as far as personality and temperament goes?

I've never encountered an aggressive milksnake, but they are QUICK when they are young. Older ones tends to slow down and be less jumpy/skittish.

Out of everything I've kept, the western hognose had to be my favorite. You have to handle them a good bit to get them as docile as you want them, but it can be done.
I have to agree with this here. I have owned:
King Snake Corn Snake Red Tail Hognose
I love my Hognose she is awesome. I don't know what you mean about the handling part though. I have owned 2 and they have both been really docile. Sure the act out when you are trying to pick them up, but rarely bite. I love the way they show off, they have a ton of personality for a snake check this out.

Yeah I love the play dead routine. I never saw my western do that, I think the easterns are better known for it. And they will strike when you go to pick them up but it's with the mouth closed 99% of the time. It's all for show really. The hissing can be kind of intimidating, but if you know they're really just big pansies, it can be kind of entertaining.

This morning I saw a TV news report on pythons taking over Florida's swamps or something... They get HUGE and people just let them go.
Now, they are fucking up the whole ecosystem.
One escaped a cage and killed a baby not long ago... like 18 deaths have been attributed to them since the 80's or whatever. Crazy!

This is debatable. I hear people argue about this all the time. I don't think that it has been proven that they are venomous. They say that if they are, the venom is only strong enough to hurt small creatures like frogs and such. The venom, if there is any, will not hurt a human. I know someone that was bitten by one, feeding gone wrong, no venom. Nothing happened at all, she had to place the snakes head under water to make it let go. My friend was not affected in any way, shape or form. So if they are venomous they are not to people.

The fangs are way back in the mouth, like the coral snake..

I know where they are silly, most speculate that the fangs are used for deflating frogs. When my friend was bit she had 2 tiny puncture marks from the fangs in the rear of the mouth. As I stated though they are not venomous to people and the fangs are most likely use for deflating their most common meal frogs.

Sure, hognose have a VERY weak neurotoxin that is about enough to kill a frog. It's not enough to effect a person at all. Plus they are rear fanged so the chance of being "envenomated" is very low anyway.
They've shown that Garter snakes have a mild neurotoxin too, no big deal as long as you're not a frog or a salamander. You'd never know the difference.
