I'll be blunt. Read this book if you havent yet (I'm sure many of you have).

It may be the sinlge most important piece of literature you will ever read.

it's a very interesting book but I strongly urge anyone who reads it to take an objective view. I have some friends who read it in high school and thought that they knew everything because they read it. If anyone tried to argue with them they would just talk down the person and insult them for not having read ishmael. It is an excellent book (I own it), but don't become one of those brainless liberal sheep who worship people like machael moore simply because he tells them what they want to hear. To most youngins' today, anyone that talks about how evil the human race is, or how evil the big bad government is, or *insert counter-culture topic here* must be right. You MUST realize that just because people are telling you what you want to hear doesn't mean their view cant be slanted. I'm not saying Ishmael is bullshit, but I can't stand the people today who mindlessly follow all the super-liberal bullshit that is out there. I'm very liberal, but that doesn't blind me from seeing all the idiots out there who are also "liberal".

sorry for the stupid rant.

oh and it was written by Daniel Quinn.

I hear where you are coming from, man. Books such as Ishmael can tend to send people into an entirely subjective and anti-human mindset.

To me personally, Ishmael is nothing I haven't been thinking about since I was 12. Quinn just laid it out in novel form and it re-opened my eyes to how I originally perceived the world and humans.

As for it being liberal jargon trying to tell people what they want to hear...hmmm. I personally don't think anyone wants to hear they are destroying the world, its resources and all of it's species, ultimately causing our own race to come to a bitter end in the very near future.

well johnB.... I live up in washington, which is overflowing with new-age hippies or whatever you want to call them. Almost everyone in my generation up here calls themself liberal. Most of them don't know anything about politics or our governments, they're just libeal because that's what everyone else is. To them, liberal means smoke pot and complain about "the man". They will support anything anti-government without even reading about it. On this same note, they (like everyone else out there) want to feel special, so they like to think that they're more enlightened than the rest of the world. They think that they're part of a small group of people who can "actually see what's REALLY going on". So naturally, anything that says that the human race as a whole is destroying the world is something they will support. It gives them a reason to point and say "look! all you people! You're destroying the world!" as if they're doing anything to save it themselves. They sit in their comfortable appartments with their wall mart posters and build eachother up by talking about how screwed up the world is.

Bottom line is.... they hate the gov because it makes them feel special because it seems to them like they can see something that's going on that nobody else can. So in the same vein, when something comes by that allows them to feel like they are better than the whole of the human race, they eagerly snatch it up and worship it. Right before they hop into their SUV to go buy the latest fashion from the GAP.

Boosh.

My English teacher a few years ago knew I was a stoner, so she told me to read this. She thought I was really liberal. And while I am, sometimes the book is a little too over the top for me. It's a very thought provoking book, and I enjoyed reading it immensely. But I have some qualms with it.

hm - i should read this. i already am a human hater - really i am. so i don't think i'll be changed over anymore than i am.

i live around the worst people. they are the NYC Liberals. The bullshit of this Earth. Honestly. They go on and on and on about how people should live free etc... but they are the BIGGEST hypocrites I've never come across. It's a fucking joke - the ideas of liberalism is great however the way most people have turned it around is no longer something I wish to be a part of. The name has become dirty...

True. But lumping EVERYONE into a generalization doesn't solve much either.
