Vermiculate is being discontinued...alternatives?

I spoke with someone at Lowe's and Home Depot today, and they said that they will no longer carry vermiculate once they current stock runs out. He said that the airborne particles in vermiculate are known to cause cancer when inhaled, and the gov't is going to start regulating it. I spoke with someone at Home Depot and he told me the same thing. So...what else can you use in place of vermiculate?

Damn! That sucks. I suppose going to str8 grain or WBS would be one of the simplest options. Unless crushed styrofoam could be used? (only half serious)

My local Lowes has also been without verm for quite some time now. I haven't asked them about it yet, though. I thought that whole vermiculite is bad thing came from that fact that one batch of it somewhere got contaminated by something. What gives?

if it's true, I guess our alternative (my bud's anyway) is to go to the nursery and buy all their verm! ...after that's gone?

I wouldn't worry. I'm sure it will be available like Cloud9 said. If not I'm sure these companies have alternatives already in production. Shell and Exxon aren't exactly going to roll over and die when we run out of fossil fuels.

Chances are they'll come out with something similar to vermiculite. But wtf guys. Everything causes cancer. Microwaves, cellphones, radio waves. Society today is so god damned contaminated, if we could transport matter through time and space, and transported say the first homosapian that "evovolved" (we'll leave that open to your own religious/scientific selves) to let's say toronto over in canada, I bet they would die of about 100 things at the same time. lol. It's true, if you don't beleive me, ask your local evolutionist
However, since vermiculate serves only 3 purposes, keeping shape of subsrate, holding moisture, and is good as a contam barrier.
Could we not use perlite?
Verm is just volcanic rock. I think your worse off eating at mcdonalds then inhailing some dried lava for fuck sakes.
Where is this ban going on anyway? North america?

The postmen's tells me its still readily available in his area. Many large retail chains and some small shops have 'discontinued' it. He has also been told the same story by a home depot green house worker. While the employee says they stopped selling vermiculite over 2 years ago, a specialty garden shop had plenty in stock to sell.
And here is an alternative source of verm. http://www.mycosupply.com
By the way this topic has come up before.

Lol that comes with any big multi million dollar coprerations.
But I think the point of this particular posts right now, is to find out the alternitives of verm. Not meaning where else can I get vermiculite, but rather, what else could I use at my garden center since my garden center does NOT sell verm anymore.. And hanky, be nice to the kittens.

Why bother trying to find an alternative to verm when it will still be available. the idea that verm causes cancer is rediculous. there was a problem with vermiculite mined from Libby,Montana that was contaminated with asbestos. Verm hasn't been mined from this location for quite some time. Despite what the pimply fuckwads at your local homedepot might tell you, vermiculite will remain easily available. just find yourself a more reliable supplier. check out this link http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2003-141/

All big hardware chains say that it's bullshit. If you go to the website www.vermiculite.com you can e-mail them and they tell you where the store nearest you is.Or just order it online. It cost a little more but they always have it in stock.

there was a scare like this at the garden store i worked at about two years ago. we were told that we'd no longer be carrying vermiculite, and to tell people that it had been taken off the market. then about 8 months later, we just started getting shipments of verm back in. nobody said anything, nobody questioned it. i have a feeling, this is just another one of those scares. verm is here to stay, no worries.
