Sunday's Great Cyanescens Find 11-16-2003
    #2112621 - 11/16/03 07:21 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

WEll after finding a few splotches of psathyrellas today I walked along a lawn and came across these 15 P. cyanescens shrooms growing in grassy area with no mulch or trees near them at all. Must have came into the lawn from a lawn mower which had previously mowed another area where they were growing and carried spores with fertilizers in them. This was a new lawn where I found these at so that would account for there being there in the lawn where I found them.
Here are nine cool images. The first was a little strange becasue the stem looked puplish and one was completely blueblack ont he cap but i did not get a good image. took 30 images of the 15 shrooms in the ground but only these 9 were worth posting.

Why Me. I was not looking for anything today.

it is rare.

and this is on a poster o from the movie House of the Dead.

Wish it would have been a big patch of them. But then again I hae not gone to the Clear cuts yet for large Pelliculosa pickings.

Wait i am confused if 99% of the cyanescens are done fruiting for the year how come your finding some?? Is that the 1% thats left MJ??? What would happen to the equation if i told you i had found many new cyans pins this weekend as well????? I hope that doesnt put us over the 1% population window we have after the HUGE freeze of 2003 or none of the other fine mushroom hunters that frequent this forum will be able to find any!! Please note this post contains 99% sarcasm.

How well do they transplant? Alder mulch abounds in a friend's yard and it could be greatly improved by a patch of cyans.

Cardboard, it wasn't just the Psilocybe shrooms which were affected by the freeze but also the edible shrooms.

I am in contact with many members of the Puget Sound Mycological Society and they too are complaining that the edibles are also ot fruing in abundance anywhere this year in the PNW.

In fact the two main sellers of edible shrooms at the weekend market said this was their worst year for picking edibles in almost 15 years.

I found less than opne ounce of P. cyanescens this year,

A few people i picked with int he past have alsom only collected small amounts here in Seattle compared to what they usually find.

Thats all I can say about that. remember that I only found 15 pseimens in a lawn. I have checked my mulched patches and there are no shrooms. There are, as I posted a few Psathyrellas I also noticed but manyt areas with mulch are not producing any quantities of any shrooms. This week I will check some clear cuts inthe rain forest and see what is going on there. But the majority of the shrooms are gone.

Many south between Roseberg, Oregon and San Fran there might be larger fruitings where it hasn;t been overly cold.

mj

Remember I have picked shrooms for thirty years or more and this is the3 worst year I have seen in ages,

I had no problem in ASia picking though, I mean I took over 3600 photographs there this summer. And ony about 1000 photos since September when I came home.

And the majority of those were non-psychoactive shrooms.

MJ:
Cardboard didn't post anything about the earlier season just that the weather has changed and the mushrooms are coming back. I think anyone would agree the year has been slow so far but to say that the mushrooms are 99% gone is a little ridiculous when people are finding them. And using the amount of pickings of the earlier season as evidence that the rest of the season is going to be bad just isn't right.
You're comparing two different things, two different time frames.

#cro,

Here are two pictures of a normal patch which I usually have evry year.

The first shows a twentieth of a ladys back yard.

This next image is a close up shot of the center to the right in the first image to show you how dense they are. This mulched garden goes completely around Mrs. X's back yard and front yard, around the house and around her fence about twenty feet from the mulched lawn edge to her backyard fence.

And It is humongous.

When you say San Francisco I take it to mean the SF bay area.  Could you clarify which one you're talking about?

I'm hoping that's what you mean, because I'm in the south bay!

Okay, I found some in Golden Gate Park in 1994.

I picked some on Mt. Tamilpai (nnot sure of the spelling) That is my knowledge of P. cyanescens in the bay Area. So I can say they range from San francisco to BC. along the I-5 corridor and to the coast. mj

Others have posted P. cyan images from San Francisco. I even had one page for a while at my site of one collection from Golden Gate park posted by a member here who sent me more images. However the page is no longer up.

mj

I dop have the images in my files.

"Usually after a three day freeze that means the end, whatever was pinning before the freeze will come up but then that is usually it for the season here in Seattle.    Maybe a few blue ringers in some lawns but the main crops are gone."

Those were only 15 mushrooms Stymee. I have already today looked at several locations and they did not come back at those spots.

I still say the patches are few and inbetween and not a lot will be found, at least not here in the city.

Small fruitings yes but nothing like they should be.

MJ why dont you come up with a new figure for us at least?? How bout we agree that approximatly 77% of the cyan patches are done. And if someone does indeed find another patch we can just change the number.....

What bothers me MJshroomer is how you continually try and quanitify the natural world when we all know that it cannot be quanitified.

If we are talking JUST active mushrooms then in my view - and experience in the Portland area - is that mushroom season is NOT over by a long shot. Cyans are just now fruiting in places (note - post freeze) where I had seen them previously and I have found some in new spots where they had not fruited prior to the freeze. Also Stunzii are now appearing (found one so far) and I know they don't care about freezes as I have picked hundreds a few years ago after a HARD freeze - after it warmed up and rained for a while.
Now as far as edible - I have not checked since the freeze. I do know of newspaper reports of excellent Chanterelle harvests though both in the Cascades and the coast range. Beyond that there are winter mushrooms such as the "pigs ear" and others that tend to appear during colder weather.
I won't discount what MJshroomer says either though. We all speak from experience and mine is limited to only the Portland OR area and the coast/coast range (Lincoln city north). Our local frost/freeze may not have been as hard as elsewhere due to the Columbia River tending to keep wind up and frost/freezing away at times.
My opinion though, speaking JUST for NW OR - Keep looking! They're out there! I have a Stunzii on my desk here at work as I type (spore printing - ya can NEVER be TOO sure)
