So much better to donate to real people, not charities which probably keep most of the profit. For all anyone knows little gabriel was actually a 42 year old getting creative with some crayons to make more money.

Not be a naysayer and perhaps I'm just jaded... but so much of this just screams scam to me.

1. Many charities like this end up taking the vast majority of the money for themselves.

African charities in particular (big and small) have a particularly bad reputation for misuse of funds (lining their own pockets) as well as government corruption interfering with aid.

2. I've heard reports of similar letters sent to people handwritten in crayon meant to tug on their heartstrings (which worked really well for you)
3. If I'm going to donate money, I would rather it go to real people in need locally. We have people starving and dying on the streets in America, why do I need to send it overseas?

5. Did they send you pictures of the kids wearing the flip flops? Did you get another handwritten letter thanking you for your most generous donation(s)? When you said you wanted to donate flip flops, why didn't they say 'Send the flip flops!", do they only take money? How do you know flip flops in Kenya don't cost 10 cents?

Even if it is 100% legit (charity seems to have started in Belgium/Netherlands)... I get that there are starving children in Africa, but there are also starving children and people in need here. Why do I want to send my money halfway across the world (with an added fee) when I have a guy living in a garbage can a block away?

Guys, you know how I wrote in the OP how I conceived an action to give away flip-flops to the kids of Kebene right? They had promised to give those to them as a christmas present.

Well.. they did, and around the turn of the year, in the spirit of "Pics or it didn't happen" they sent me this card they made of it:







"Asante Sana" means "Thank you" in Kiswahili.

So there, that's how easy it is to make a difference.

If you can, please donate to these awesome children!

Thats good that you can actually see the sandals you gave them on them. Still donating to far away people or anything where I do not make direct contact with the people seems too risky to me when you could easily have a guaranteed donation by giving it to someone you see in person. Glad your donation actually got to the people you sent to.
