Ok, I've never been into glass, but recently I bought a glass bat because it was very pretty.
anyway, I've heard that over time, they "fill in"
what exactly does this mean? just so I am sure.

As the resin builds up on the inside, the pipe becomes more opaque and the colors are then more visible.

Yes it does. If you clean it right, it will look like it did the day you got it. That's the great thing about glass.

the best kind of glass to 'fill in' is a color-changing piece. if it is opaque, it will not change, but most glass pieces are color-changing.
My buddy blows glass at a smoke shop here in town and they just started making Glass-on-glass extension bongs.. fuckin revolutionary.
Basically, you buy a bong with an extension that comes with it, so you can take out the extension and smoke a 1 foot bong, or if you're feelin good you can add it and smoke a 3 foot bong. and they're all different and you can buy other extensions.
Fuckin brilliant!

I have an intereseting piece. Well, I have a cornucopia of interesting glass pieces but this one has an attribute shared by no other... It retains any color changes! This is notable in the fact that it was originally ~99% clear with a single wispy red spiral running the length of the piece. That red has bled into a rainbow of colors and even when freshly, spotlessly cleaned with methanol the colors are still there as if made that way. The colors are in a state of constant bleeding. I've had this piece for about 5 years now. There are whites, blues, greens, reds, and yellows and from one cleaning to the next the bleediing spreads a bit further and the colors are not even close to the way they were prior to cleaning. I have since been unable to locate a blower who can explain this. All I know is that when I originally bought it I was told by the shop proprieter that it was a type of "soft-glass" that retained color changes. BTW, it's tough as hell. I've dropped it from waist height a couple of times, thinking it was a goner in slow-mo watching it fall, with no visible effects!

Here's an example with my piece:
Clean
And Really really Dirty
Looks much better dirty, eh? Plus you don't get as many 'chunks' when you're hitting the end of the bowl.
