got my daughter a ball python for Christmas
    #20995117 -

So my 8 year old daughter has been wanting a snake for a few months now. All she talks about is snake this and snake that. My wife didn't want one in the house for whatever reason.

So anyway, wife decided to end the marriage and moved out a week ago. so guess who gets a snake now!

I got a 3 year old female ball python with a 90 gallon glass enclosure. heating pad, heat light, 2 hides and some fake greenery for 80$ off craigslist.

haven't fed her yet, waiting til sunday. I don't get the kids back til wednesday so i figured its a good time to feed so my daughter isn't picking up the snake while it digests it food.

I know there are a few ball python owners here. What bedding do you recommend? The last guy used coco coir, but I'm leaning toward shredded newspaper. Any thoughts?

I use either aspen shavings or a recycled newspaper bedding.  I remember that you should avoid cedar.

Good call on the ball python, they're great pets. Feed frozen/thawed.

yes I read that cedar is toxic to snakes. I get lots of newspaper and I think it would be easier to spot clean the urate and feces.

I've got my humidity around 50% and temps around 85 by the ground.

I was also told to feed frozen thawed small to mid size rats. The snake is about 4 feet long
Do you feed thawed cold? I read somewhere that you should put it in a ziploc and submerge in warm water.

Awesome lookin snake man!  Happy looking kid too.

What I do is take the mouse/rat out of the freezer and let it thaw on the counter until its totally soft. I leave it in a bag, obviously. Then I submerge it in hot (not boiling, but warmer than warm) water until it's kinda warm to the touch.  Then I dangle it over the snake until he hits it and coils.

Do some research on shredded newspaper. I don't know if this applies to snakes, but I once used shredded newspaper on a large tank that had rats in it, and overnight the print rubbed off and turned all the white rats sooty.  Walmart has real cheap aspen shavings.  That is a real big tank to bed, but she'll grow into it.

I had one years and years ago. Perfect pet. Perfect snake. I miss it, actually.

Beware of mites thru natural bedding. I used a felt material, heat lamp, (no heat rock), and timed daytime lamp.

Without a real daylight cycle their feeding will suffer greatly. Mine went 9 months without eating because of this. Smh... Got the lamp replaced, ate 3 hours later.

If it'll eat already dead mice or rats, do that, if not, you need to get live. Sometimes you can dangle a dead one (That's warm) and they'll strike it. Mine was fussy.

Tons of reading to do elsewhere. A lot of small things you may not have thought of that you should perhaps know.

Good choice, man.

Snakes are so cute

I don't get why people are afraid of them

If anything, do solid newspaper and have a hiding spot.

Yeah, I've seen that work for lots of people, just folded paper on the floor of the tank.

I just put like 12 layers of whole, unfolded, paper down and that was it. Cleaning was a breeze..
I had a very large enclosure, though, that was bigger than a whole open news page.

Beautiful snake!

This was with my Burmese I had, though... The Ball had felt most its life.

Oh you got a python for your 8 year old daughter.  What could possibly go terribly, terribly wrong?

The Burmese are real cool, helluva big snake.  I like the color/pattern morphs and temperaments of the ball python a lot more though.

Nothing, n00b.  That snake is pushing maximum size as it is, and I trust a ball python more than I trust a Labrador retriever.

It dies and breaks her heart for a bit.
It bites and draws blood for a minute..

That's about it.

I would also trust any random Ball python over any random dog with my child.

For real.  I got bit on the face by a red tail boa, same size as the pictured python, when I was ten.  It stung, I bled a bit, but I still held that snake all the time and, if anything, it made me less fearful of snakes.

My buddy used to have a pet python and he was the most friendly creature I have ever met

It was a sad day when he died

My corn snake died over the summer but I didn't feel too bad because she lived nearly 6 years over captive life expectancy.  That's like a 115 year old person.

Thanks for all the info guys

This is the enclosure I got with it. 48" x 18" x 24" Not bad for 80$!
Snake seems really happy! I'm exited to feed it for the first time.
But this is my daughters pet. Once we establish a routine, she will be doing all the cleaning and feeding. Its a good lesson in responsibility.
