The Water Shortage Problem
    #20904701 -

Water is the most precious resource on this planet and I don't know how reliable this information is but it certainly seems something to bat an eye towards. If this is true, then it is another disgusting problem we humans have put ourselves in.

Here is some interesting information:

Quote:
Around 700 million people in 43 countries suffer today from water scarcity.

By 2025, 1.8 billion people will be living in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity, and two-thirds of the world's population could be living under water stressed conditions.

With the existing climate change scenario, almost half the world's population will be living in areas of high water stress by 2030, including between 75 million and 250 million people in Africa.

In addition, water scarcity in some arid and semi-arid places will displace between 24 million and 700 million people.

Sub-Saharan Africa has the largest number of water-stressed countries of any region.

Source

It may be that the idea water shortage may be used as a method of fear mongering, however if it is true then we have a great problem on our hands. I do think that the way that society uses water is outrageous and we would be stupid to think that it wouldn't have some negative impact or outcome. With the population also rising rapidly are we to see more and more water shortages all over the world?

The info says that we will see that 2/3 of the world's population is going to experience shortages in water. What does this mean for the human race? What does this mean for our species and the planet? More wars? More hatred? Who knows, there are a great many questions and little answers.

My hope is that technology will move us out of this, there must be a sustainable way to get water to everyone...Without destroying the planet and without destroying ourselves.

I would love to hear everyone else's opinion on it, what are your thoughts on this issue? Are you aware of any solutions, that you have read or have researched? Please feel free to post whatever you think relates to this.

Discuss intelligently.

Peace and love

I hope we find a way to make seawater desalinization cheaper and more cost effective. Right now it is horrendously expensive and energy intensive. I think that will provide the relief to water stressed regions as aquifers begin to run dry. If not we may experience severe population reduction.

Well if you were to drink the sea water you would easily die from using it, so essentially there would need to be desalinisation before you can drink it ( as Gilgamesh has said ). It requires shit loads of energy to do it, that's the catch. I mean we have pile of problems that are heaping into a mountain of deeply inter-connected factors and variables.

We have an energy problem as it is which just raises further questions of how the hell are we going to get a viable and sustainable energy source in the first place.

Here is an interesting article regarding that. (desalination that is).

solar energy

there's already a sidewalk made out of solar panels in some country

I hope that we can see solar panels being used more. I mean for God sake we have a blistering hot desert that covers 1/3 of Africa. We can use that somehow. There isn't a linear solution, it won't be that easy, the world is too complex and built on too many complex systems.

My issue resides more with the possible injustices that water shortages will create, the extreme poverty that it already has created is shocking enough. If there isn't a way of finding a sustainable source, are we going to find that the filthy rich are going to be living in pleasure domes? Where the outside world is a forgotten dream? Where water is only available for the wealthy to freely exploit?

That would suck. But nah, water is a renewable resource.

It all evaporates into the clouds, then gets rained back down. The earth is 70% water or some shit.

We ain't gonna run out any time soon.

What about the geo thermal energy produced by many volcanoes in africa or from the rift valley. That energy could be used to desalinate ocean water. In case the greenhouse effect starts to impact solar energy.

Ha right..
actually iceland is heading up the geothermal energy front heres a quick site linkhttp://www.nea.is/geothermal/
The site claims geothemal energy accounts for 25% of the country's total electric grid. Being that the crust of the earth is so thin there.
Its also thin in africas great rift valley which is handily placed in subsaharan africa or Ethiopia
so yea... lots and lots of black magic rituals...

I have a great idea!!! With water being in question, maybe we can get the UN and big countries to set up 'water exchanges' and they can sell 'water credits'  That way the rich motherfuckers and their friends in government can soak the Peons for a common commodity. :awesomenod::smirk:

I don't nessecarily think its about where the water goes, I don't think it goes anywhere. What this issue relates to I think is probably  how many people there are in the world and subsequently the problem of providing for every single person.

The geothermal idea sounds great. If used alongside other methods that are renewable, perhaps we will see more abundance in electricity and hopefully more water will be made available.

If however, humans take no initiative to do something about the electricity problem we're going to see a lot stupid shit take place. If the population of the world starts to burgeon at the edges and we still hhaven't found a renewable resource, every single person will be affected.

Most of the water problem, from what I gather does have to do with the population and our diet. We have a high intensity agricultural industry that devours more water than we have. Also the oil industry uses massive amounts of water to pump into the ground forcing out the oil. This process known as fracking is polluting our ground water supplies. But even with all that the problem is not a resource based one... strangely like most issues facing humanity it is an issue created souly and solveable only by ourselves. Which is why I think the faster way to solve it is through massive forced consumption of entheogenic plants.. :bubbles:
or whatever....

This is a large factor, but not even the biggest problem at this point.

This problem is currently insignificant in terms of water shortage. It has no influence. I don't think fracking to unlock shoal gas is a particularly good idea, but it's not a real cause of the water problem.

The main problem with the fresh water supply is not so much that we don't have enough of it, but we have it in different places than we used to get it a few decades ago, and when it's there, there's a lot of it all at once and then again nothing for a long period of time. So the fresh water supply is less reliable than it used to be in the places where we decided to live. Places like sub-Saharan Africa receive little rain due to climate change (which is the major issue), and this is also the problem in the large parts of California where glacial runoff has dropped to much lower levels than a few decades ago. Poor water management plays a substantial role as well, in the sense that we don't use the water that's there efficiently and we're currently not very capable of dealing with the large amounts of water that are available at very specific moments (for a short duration) and places.

The solution, as I see it, would be threefold:
1. increasing our efficiency in water use, i.e. in agriculture and to a lesser extent in industry.
2. making better use of momentary supplies of water that are the result of torrential rains; i.e. better buffering systems to deal with brief but intense wet periods.
3. drastically reducing the cost of energy (which translates into moving away from carbon fuels and towards sustainable sources with lower factor costs) in order to make desalination attractive in areas where the above two solutions aren't feasible.
If we fail to do these things (and I think all three are necessary from a global perspective), water will indeed become much more of a problem than it already is.

Very true. Location location location. People in the great lakes be like. "What water problem?" Where as just a quick jog south and the stuff they have in rivers in west virgina.... yea thats not water... its flamable..
I moved to San Francisco recently and having visited vegas a few weeks ago seeing lake meade really drives your point home.
We are about to see massive flooding due to snowmelt if we could store our water more efficiently perhaps that could help.
Im no chemist but could we split it into hydrogen and oxygen and would the two seperaly weigh less and be easier to ship...
maybe its a good thing to write that down.. just because it looks less intelligent than it sounded in my head...

Haha, funny thought, but there's a thing called 'conservation of mass' If you split water into its constituent atoms, the combination will still weigh as much, but it will be *much* more difficult to transport as gases are generally more difficult to transport than liquids or solids, and hydrogen is a very particular example of that due to its tiny size (so it tends to leak like mad). Also, you'll be transporting two hazardous substances (high flammability) instead of one safe substance

Its not just fracking. The oil industry uses a massive amount of water and that water doesn't get returned to the natural cycle. It ends up in a place called a tailing pond which is toxic sludge.

People don't seem to care, they water their lawns and cars while others have nothing to drink, we really are a sick and disgusting society.
