Super contamination resistant caerulescens mycobag project
    #20771536 -

Ok so i have this psilocybe caerulescens strain i cloned from wild specimen.

substrate for this bag, this is what i used:

80% sugar cane bagasse from sugar mill
10% rice bran
10% worm castings

so the colonization was nice... it started fast then it slowed a little bit, then it finished colonizing just today. but before it had finished colonizing I realized the bag had a little puncture at the top, so i just used some masking tape to cover the small hole (these bags are selfmade and the polipropilene is very thin so they are kinda fragile after PC'ed and i may have damaged it while handling it while i continually looked at it to check advances)

I used clean mycelium isolate then to sorghum in jar, then to PCed bag I made myself... i have been doing my own cheap mycobags like the ones of this thread, wich are not failproof but i have had certain degree of succes, like 50%...  ( (i cant afford better at the moment) but im soon will be able to... I have just found some smaller more resistant bags.

So I was surprised that the mycelium finished colonizing the punture bag before it contaminated... maybe because the top part of the substrate was very densely colonized contams were not able to get through, and also the substrate was very stuffed in there too..

Ok what i have seen others do and get awesome results is just case directly in the mycobag and put in sgfc.... which is what i intend to do.. but i dont know... I havent had much luck with pasteurizing substrates really, and its obvious that there are some mold spores on top of the cake... or does mycelium eats them away??

I have seen some people fruit it with no casing at all... wich could be a possibility too... i want some input guys about what you think should it be better with this cake?? Im so excited...

I also have some jars colonizing with this... these are intended to be fruited directly from the jars with a sterilized casing done inside SAB... pasteurization has never gone right for me, I always heat in 70-90ºc for 90 mins, and it always contaminates

btw i also have 2 finished bags of hericium wich i plan to put on the SGFC too!

This is so cool! I'd just case her up and see what happens... With such a high ratio of strong myc to contam I bet it will just eat it and outcompete whatever is in there. Hell... bacteria could help trigger fruiting!

sorry i forgot to update this... the bag was cased with african violet mix with a little bit of crushed eggshell and sand, this was almost a month ago... it has not contaminated yet and the mycelium looks nice too.... i keep my hopes up for my first psilocybe grow!!!

I skipped growing cubies because since i tried landslide mushrooms i really dont use them anymore... i just like eating derrumbes much better trips with these...
ill keep updates

yes first PDA agar. i have recently discovered the benefits of adding activated charcoal to agar... it looks so much better in black charcoal agar

Looks like trich spores.

That step is counterproductive. Trich spores spread over a large area if you mist them. Unlikely most other molds, fresh Trich spores are too heavy for a significant amount to become airborne on their own so that's not an issue if that's what you were worried about. They can cling to the water droplets though and spread when those break apart on impact and parts get launched into the air. Of course if you're going to salt you should try to do it before spores have developed in the first place. If you're seeing green already it's best to just toss it or fruit it outside.

Quote:
I can't believe it has made it this far. In the past when I saw green the whole tub would be covered in 48hrs.

Trich doesn't spread into already colonized areas as quickly as it may seem. When it seems to spread quickly like that it's because it had already spread to the other areas before they were colonized. The vegetative mycelium is practically invisible, you can't even see it happening. So you're not really saving anything but just making a bad situation worse by sending mold fragments into the air when you cut contaminated substrate out like that.

hi!! here little update...

the mold in the casing was spreading... so i sliced and discarded the top part of the cake...

the remaining (aparantly) clean sweet smelling cake of caerulescens mycelium was buried somewhere with a lot of wood shavings in the hole.

watering daily...

I have an outdoor project in a big plastic vegetable market basket that involves caerulescens and pure woodshavings that seem to be colonizing nicely!!! im intendig to do this to see if it works to make outdoor patches a la woodlover tek... would be nice to spreading the love to other secret areas and help the mushies gain more ground

Not familiar with this strain,

Will it get cold where you are? Will that affect them or do they benefit from a cold shock like some species?

Caerulescens is not a strain, it is a whole different species than cubensis, which imho is a much better trip and potency than cubes... its also a lot more challenging and fun to grow... slow fruiter (up to 2 months for pinset i have read)

It doesnt get much cold here.... i dont think it needs cold shocking because its a tropical species... sometimes it is found on places that get colder than here though so there must be strains adapted to cold...

However, in Georgia they do really flourish with the first weeks of "sweatshirt weather." So I'd venture to say that cold shocking might just be worth something...

i guess im gonna try flushing it with cold water... or maybe one of the other bags that are on its way! i could try doing 2 at the same time one cold shock one without

I still firmly believe there to be at least a few varieties of P. caerulescens, two of which grow in Georgia. Although the science hasn't yet confirmed this (maybe I should get my samples sequenced). Just picking them for a few years I would find one variety in the heat of summer after hard rains, right out in the open sun in red clay washouts mixed with pine needles. Then in the autumn when things cooled off, they would fruit almost exclusively in lawns, grassy areas, and dense Liquidambar styraciflua (sweetgum) groves.

Here are some Georgia (United States), mid-summer caerulescens...

And here are what I refer to as the var. weilii. Notice how different the fruits are in shape and overall appearance. Not to mention the slight habitat difference...
