Strictipes?
    #20869072 -

Found in a public park in and area not grazed by animals. I've found regular looking libs here before but none today. These seem to have a broader looking cap and a smaller nipple than usual.

Where are you located? They match up well, I can't think of any thing else they could be this time of year.

Looks like Deconica inquilina.

Northern Ireland.

I checked this spot a couple of weeks ago and the majority of them were this shape too, but I did find a few regular looking libs too. However, today they were all this shape, and there were no regular looking ones

How can you tell the difference? I googled that one and from the pics those look more brownish than what I found. These ones look more concolourous with libs.

Notice the straws of grass attached to the stem bases.
Typical for D. inquilina.

Some of the stem bases look kind of bluish?

Not yet. I'm sure at least some of those were proper libs though. But it will be an interesting comparison :mushroom2:

I agree, the colors of D.inquilina are browner and the stems are almost reddish.
Yours look more like libs and the closest look alike is Psilocybe strictipes. Your collection also has some very thin partial veil remnants that are covered with purple-brown spores like other pics of Psilocybe strictipes. Libs also show this feature.

Yeah, I've just been looking at distribution maps, and it seems that (D.inquilina) is more of a Scandinavian species, it's not even listed on the Northern Ireland Fungus Group website which has a quite substantial list of species. Plus the gills don't look right either and I don't see so much of a pellicle on the D.inquilina.

Well, the appearance of D. inquilina is somewhat variable - a bit in the same manner as liberty caps.

Also they share features like the viscid cap with pellicle and striate margin.

I'm not 100 % sure it is D. inquilina, but yours resemble my observations of that species.

That being said, you might also have a mixed collection.

If there is blue in those stem bases, it is surely hard to discern from that picture.
Mind you, blueing in those smaller species is usually hard to catch on camera, ime.

Also notice that if you pick liberty caps by pulling up the whole stem base, more often than not
there will be small strands of a certain green moss (I keep forgetting the name) attached to it.

As mentioned, D. inquilina will rather be attached directly to grass.

It is apparently common all over the European continent and the British Isles.
It was previously known as Psilocybe inquilina, you might search under that name also.

Yeah, you're right, it does occur in the British Isles although there is no record of it as yet in Northern Ireland.

But I know a good method to rule it out

I have to say these look more like a Deconica than Psilocybe, I would say either deconica or really funky libs, i dont believe strictipes is a species until i see genetic evidence of it diverging the collections from libs. Im hard to satisfy tho .

Totally normal libs . Not every lib is the typical bell shape. Over half in my fields are flat . D inquilina is meatier . You would know when you saw them. I found them at my parents a few years ago.

I wouldn't say they are meatier than semilanceata. The caps seem somewhat flimsy in comparison - ime.

Most of the D. inquilina I find are similar to semilanceata with the exception that
the stem is usually reddish brown with white veil remnants. That is the biggest "but"
about this collection. But - according to description they are variable.

I have to agree with psylosymon. He has been hunting libs longer then almost everyone on this site. I think we can call these mushrooms officially identified.

The inquilina I found were totally identical to the ones shown in PMOTW. If you are experienced with libs you would know right away , they are quite different I thought. Did you get yours scoped ? I never got around to it and kinda shit the bed on the observation.

The thing that strikes me as odd about this patch is the lack of variability. Nobody is argueing that libs are very variable. Usually when I find a patch of libs I will find some with huge pellicles, some with no pellicle at all, some with huge caps, others with tiny ones, and even some that look like this. But these all seem to conform to the same shape - and I found at least 50 of them. Can any of the strictipe sceptics explain this lack of variability?
