the materialist paradigm (repost)...
    #20849795 -

the titular :boobs: paradigm holds that we are merely biochemical machines..and that consciousness/mind/etc are simply a deterministic function of the material brain...

this paradigm is rapidly gaining popularity.. which i find deeply disturbing (and not the least bcos it is difficult to argue against)...

do you agree or disagree w/ materialism?.. and why or why not?...

So what if that's what it is? What's so disturbing about that? Doesn't change much for me, it's just an idea.

OP, I'm pretty sure that we're something closer to the electrical charge running the machines (the physical flesh body) rather than the cables (nerves and vessels) that it's running through.

Food for thought: a calm mind (steady, cohesive electric patterns in the brain) are what most people chase around after. Misguided people think that the happiness comes from the house, or from the car or big plasma TV. I call bullshit and nonsense, the healthy brainwave patterns, the strong electrics that make us feel alive and vibrant and fully present, those have very little to do with material possessions, a lot more with how we think, eat, move and breathe, as well as who we touch skins with and how we do it, and what kind of visual / auditory fields we spend time in.

I know this because I've seen A LOT of people who have the house and car and plasma, and they don't have the strong cohesive electrics in their head, and they're miserable with themselves, or at the very least bored and slightly disappointed. That "is this all there is?" feeling. I used to have it too, and on most days I have it no longer.

I don't need to own the forest or the park to spend time in it. Most things that help us clear our electric functioning, are free. Skin, air, water, movement, nature.

Owning a noisy corporation where I go every day and spend time with nervous worried people, always running around worrying about profits, will give me a buzzing mind and dubious electric patterns to explore and experience the world with.

If people measured this stuff more (and they're starting to, but veeeery slowly) they'd see how a psy trip is "cleaner" (electrically, in the brain and body) than an alcohol evening or a cheapo tobacco smoke, how having many things and worrying about them is in fact less chill than having few and being content, etc.

It's not the materials, it's how you use em. I'm much happier now on a cheap bike and some painting brushes, than I've ever been with a car and some 9 to 5 job, however well paid and fancy the business card.

To the one who knows what they're doing, a simple sphere can be hours and hours of fun, each day for a lifetime:

To the hungry disorganized mind, all the millions in the bank will provide very little real joy. There's more worry about "what if it runs out" or "why does X have more than I do", etc. The money won't move for you, it won't breathe for you, it won't think happy thoughts and feel happy bubbly tingly feelings for you.

But what can you do, consumers will be consumers

This view imo is very valuable for science , since it stays in the materialistic realm. Implications are important as well, since from a neuroscientific standpoint, we can infer that an activation of a pattern of neurons represents concepts , from a connectionist's point of view.
While from a dualistic point of view, many just state that brain activity is merely a correlation. Not to mention that viewing the mind as a separate substance would mean it's impossible to study the mind scientifically. If things were not deterministic , then it would make things unfalsifiable, untestable, unpredictable and therefore unscientific.

It just make's a lot more sense to me that a series of unintelligent atom's are arranged in a particular way and interact in a particular way ,leading to the emergence of consciousness.  Many do not find it hard to believe that it gives rise to unconscious mechanisms such as classical conditioning, so I don't see why we can't also say it give's rise to other  conscious mechanisms like the ability to speak and comprehend.  When one lesions a particular part of the brain we can strip away these abilities and can strip away the senses.

There are mechanisms that greatly effect attention as well. In fact there is a condition known as hemineglect where if a patient were to draw a tree , he/she could only draw one half of it and the other side is blank! Or when imagining  walking in a city you're familiar with they're only aware of one half of the city based on how they are facing. If they do a 180 degree turn, suddenly they're aware of the other half and unaware of the previous half!
Very interesting results from neuropsychology.

I also find that determinism can lead to a lot more compassion, compared to free will. It gives me a lot more reason to empathize with another's upbringing of why he's a criminal, instead of making the judgement that he's inherently a bad person or that he chose to be a bad person. It's too easy to point fingers, and a lot more difficult to think about the environment probably plays a much bigger role than we give it credit for.

What a beautiful post friend, especially this^.  It gratifies me to no end to see such wisdom in the youth of today. (I assume you are young)

Anyway thanks for making such a fine entrance and welcome to you.  I would like to invite you to the forum just above this one.  You are just the type for debate oriented discussion imo.:satansmoking:

Karl Popper once famously pointed out that with relativity and quantum physics, materialism had transcended itself.  That is, what we once thought of as "matter" turns out to be energy.  So what is energy?  This is the part where people don't seem to inquire further.  A lot of New Age types tend to think of energy as some sort of plasma-like substance.  But if you look at how energy is defined scientifically, whether we're talking kinetic, potential, gravitational, or any other kind of energy, it seems to be a property of objects that relates to other objects.  Yet if these objects are composed of matter, which is composed of energy, which is a kind of relation to other objects, then it seems we are stuck in a strange loop:  it's all relations between relations between relations, all the way down.  Energy seems to be a kind of principle of change.  So it appears that there might be something to Heraclitus' statement that "all is flux."

I know this is the S&M forum, so I'll spare you all the gory details...

but...

Relativity and quantum mechanics are unequivocally at odds with the Cartesian framework.  This is not a secret, and this is not news.  If relativity and quantum mechanics are correct, the way western civilization is thinking about them is wholly dysfunctional and wrong.

"Materialism" usually refers to the Cartesian approach.  The materialist West doesn't even know how far behind its culture is lagging from discovery and truth.  These discussions about materialism are cartoons about error.

Just wanted to expand on Silversoul's point, thanks, carry on...

The way western civilization thinks about most things in life, is IMO at least dubious and suspect, if not all the way dysfunctional and wrong. A constant putting of the cart before the horse, as it were. Personally I think it has to do with leftover Christian influence, bad habits developed under that kind of twisted mindset, and also it has to do with a diet very very poor in psychedelics. That's what monkeys do when they haven't had access to a more encompassing, integrating, liquid mental state. They get caught up in rigid thinking, get territorial (not just about land but about beliefs and opinions and models of the world) and let's not forget unimaginative.

I wish I was a physicist, to be able to ask the visions about how all this works and be able to formulate it back in physics terms, but oh well, I'm an artist this particular lifetime. Maybe the next time around

But I will say we are most definitely NOT a culture of materialism. Like Alan Watts says, someone who is a materialist would care about materials, not be content with cheap mass produced everything, plastics, microwaved food and so on. We would not live and work in lifeless rectangular sardine boxes painted in a lifeless boring color, usually white. We'd have more imaginative ideas about windows, other than "more rectangles".

I'm one of those creatures that believes we are magical and this universe is magical. We have thoughts (and it doesn't matter the mechanism of those thoughts) and those thoughts originate from where? That they emerge, and then we can make them "real" by creation, be it with our hands, lips, or tools (musical instruments, knives, chisels) so that something we imagined becomes solid physical material.

This is as far as I'm concerned, alchemy.

Although, I'm curious to know what wonder and mystery there is for those reasonable mindsets that live in the materialism world.

Great wonder and mystery actually. When the eyes are open, any point of focus provides endless wonder and joy. You can say that most of this forum is deeply materialistic, in the sense that it's driven by deep fascination with one kind of material, a certain kind of molecules and how they function when played with

But for that you have to take your materialism and follow it to where it leads, whereas a lot of Western society doesn't really do that. They try or claim they do, but don't really stick with it for too long.

That's why for instance most smokers smoke crappy commercial cigarettes, not fancy pipes filled with studied-at-length tobacco, or better yet some carefully designed home made blend from different plants. Most coffee drinkers have never had a cup of freshly roasted coffee, just stale week-old or month-old stuff, focusing instead of the minutia of packaging or what shirt or clever glasses the Starbucks guy was wearing. We'd all be way better off if we followed actual materialism, and the rest of society did as well.

It's perfectly rational to accept the materialist paradigm if you haven't experienced anything beyond the ordinary, run of the mill world/culture/consciousness.

If you do happen to go beyond it, you no longer accept it, pretty quickly I might add.

Trust your experience and make up your own mind.
