President of Iceland on Social Welfare in the Nordic Countries * 5
    #20833533 -

Kinda makes sense, huh?

"President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson makes the case that providing universal access to healthcare and education is not harmful, but actually helpful for a thriving economy."

Yeah if both those things were free people would be more free to do awesome things instead of getting stuck in grinds.

Think about it though.

How many people are just working to pay off school loans or health problems?

It only works in small homogeneous countries, it would never work in the US, there are too many people that would take advantage of the situation.

The Nordic model is perfect and has been for decades. Every country should work towards that but sadly most countries chose a completely different way and are now too far away from that model. It would take 150 years to reach the Nordic model. Just changing the mentality of people would be a colossal task.

Social welfare leads directly to wealth.

It takes a certain type of people to accomplish the Nordic model, it would never work in the US and many other parts of the world.

I know. We took different paths to wealth. We got there in the end. But when compare the path we took compared to the Nordic model, I can saay hands down that their way is better than ours.

What country is a Nordic country? How does he move to another country while still be a president of Iceland still? I dont get it.

Scandinavian nations like Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and a few island nations in that region (the only one I can recall offhand is the Faroe Islands cuz their language sounds incredible in music) are the Nordic countries.

"I have no way of knowing whether you, who eventually will read this record, like stories or not. If you do not, no doubt you have turned these pages without attention. I confess that I love them. Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

Inheriting wealth by being oil/resource rich and small?  Yea, that would be great.  The easiest path towards wealth is often inheritance.  The rest of the world has to actually earn its way though.  We cant all be Norway and Kuwait.  There isn't enough resources in the world to provide the Nordic standard of living across the board.

the president of Iceland lives a stones throw from Reykjavik in a small neighborhood.  you can walk up and knock on his door.  its a possibility he'll answer it.

just a quick note so everyone remembers that the United States of America is as far from the nordic way of being as I am from being a giraffe

In that superficially they are much different but with respect to the broader tree of life a human and a giraffe are quite similar?  Because the US and Nordic countries are far more similar than nearly any two countries you would randomly compare.

please, tell me more.  please weight your argument towards the topic of racial and sociodemographic homogeneity, because the farther a country is from sociodemograhpic and racial homogeneity, the more difficult it is to enforce broad and effective social welfare policies.

For the record, my responses are specifically regarding 'social welfare programs' (as the thread title states) and their ability to be enacted here in the US.  'universal healthcare and education' (as the OP lists) I think are a bit easier pills for the US to swallow than other social welfare programs.  health and education are things most people will agree are fine.  it's the foodstamps, unlimited unemployment insurance, etc. that America has trouble dealing with.

i have not expressed any of my personal views in any of my posts thus far, by the way.  just throwing that out there
