What were your earliest memories of using the internet and or a computer?
    #20751315 -

I have a few:

1) Being in elementary school (91-94ish) and getting a quiz with the question:

"Email is mail that takes approximately how long to get to the receiver?"
A: A couple seconds
B: A couple hours
C: A couple days
D: A couple weeks

I put down a couple hours!

This was a time when you used typewriters for reports! It was before you had a family computer in the house. And it made no sense to me (as a kid in elementary) that mail could arrive seconds after being sent.

2) Being in Toronto and going to a computer lab, where internet was this up and coming thing. Sat on the computer and was somewhat amazed that you could get the daily newspaper on a computer screen. Probably AOL.com...

3) Nextdoor neighbor had an old computer. This is probably again, when I am in elementary school. Although it was new technology it still sucked. I remember it being very basic, sometimes it would start up, sometimes it wouldn't. And took forever to get going. I think we spent all this effort just to play some stupid game.

4) Family computer at neighbors that you basically use to play solitaire and minecraft. In fact, back in the days, when you had a computer, you probably spent at least 100 hours playing games like "hearts", "solitaire", and "minecraft" over and over. I had this game called "King's Quest" that was pretty cool also.

Finally, in high school we got the original Xbox with the original Halo. We loved that game but there was no such thing as Xbox Live! If you wanted to play multiplayer you had to connect a massive wire from one TV to another and play with your friends in the other room.

Any early technology stories or first memories of computers/internet?

I remember when the family computer was an Atari 130XE.  I remember using the Apple II in grade school and playing Oregon Trail.  I remember how amazed I was when I had computer lab in 6th grade and they had Windows 3.1.  And of course, who could forget this sound:

You used to have to dial phone numbers to get to s BBS (bulletin board system) which was like a website kind of but it was all just text and you would have to type stuff to navigate.

I remember the old Apple computers with the huge 5" disks that were truly floppy disks.

The first time I used a computer had to have been something like 1998-1999. I was five or six years old. My parents bought my older sister, who was ten at the time, her very own desktop computer, along with a nice collection of JumpStart computer games and other learning games.

The first time I used the Internet was the early 2000s. 2002-2004, maybe? The sites I remember visiting regularly were AOL, Mary-Kate and Ashley, Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, Spice Girls, and everythinggirl.com

When the internet first came out you used to hsve to dial your internet provider up to get onto the internet. . Good times.  Then coaxile cable and DSL modems came out it was a huge deal if you had one.

My first grade class was featured in the local news paper back in the early 90s.
We were featured because we had the most computers in one classroom of any other school district in my state.

We had a whopping 3 computers.

I used to play Oregon Trail on an old Apple (probably IIe) with a monochrome monitor. When I was about 12, I got a Commodore 64.

Later, in my early, early 20's (20 or 21), I used my Commodore to get on one guy's local BBS. Commodore didn't use ASCII, it used PETSCII, so some of the characters came out all wrong. They sysop messaged me to ask what kind of computer I was using, and to tell me my password was weak.

I also used it to access the local university's electronic card catalog to find books from home.

First experience with "internet" was from one of those "free" AOL CDs. I cancelled after the first month, but they kept taking my money anyway. I finally had to close my bank account to stop them. I wound up trading my first PC (a high end 486) for a small ceramic kiln, which I still have, and which has retained its value far better than that computer did, I'm sure.
