Hitchhiking

Hoping some of y'all might be able to a brother out with some experience & advice.

I've only ever hitched rides in small communities on the west coast going to/from festivals, however potential drivers in these situations represent a rather care-free/chill subsection of society. Basically a noob to hitchiking in the real world :lol: The city I'm trying to get to is only an hour drive away... I'm assuming there will be a lot of traffic going that direction on a Friday.

So where should I start? In your experience, do I have a better shot at getting picked up on the roadside? Or perhaps the gas station at the edge of town? Do people generally take well to being approached/asked where they're headed? Have you found certain demographics more likely to be helpful?

Pretty open-ended question. But here's hoping that some of you guys can hit me up with some shroomery wisdom!

Have a pretty girl with you and the world is your oyster.  Otherwise, write where you are going on a cardboard sign and stand at the exit to the interstate in the direction you want to go.

pretty girls would do nothing but good for getting a ride.  there is the safety aspect though.


I've had luck at asking at a gas station, standing on the road or whatever.  When your standing on the road, you're going to feel stupid sticking your thumb up or holding a sign - until you get a ride.

As far as demographics go, I don't think there's any one clear type of person that will pick up a hitchhiker.  I've only gotten maybe 10-15 rides so I haven't done it enough to say.  They're all people who just want company.



One other thing, if you're on the edge of a city and trying to get to the other side, it's going to suck.  It just sucks hitchhiking outside of cities in general, ime

Your best bet is a gas station, or a drive thru of a fast food place. I have been hitching rides for years, just around town though. I suppose hitchhiking on the highway is more difficult.

Not that hard, just gotta look non-threatening and totally desperate.

I hitch so far, then hitch a little farther, and walk in-between. It really isn't that hard in town. I only do it when it is too cold to walk.

pick up trucks are your best bet. people would rather have a stranger in the bed of their truck than in their car

When I was traveling we'd get a lot of rides on the side of the highway where they can pull over. Once in coloeprado some dude let us crash and made us eggs for breakfast and broke out solar bong hits.

I fucking miss traveling, but I might be headed north soon.
