Can't get a decent pick but it's pretty dark and mushy looking

Just keep it dry and in lots of direct sunlight. It will probably pup out from near the base.

I'm enjoying this thread. Glad you came over EnoRoxxx. I think I'm going to bring mine in. It's rained almost every day since potting them. They look great though

I did a bunch of surgery recently, I found that if you make a cut you want to put it in full direct sunlight all day for 2-3 days.  Probably a 95% success rate on 2 days, so I do 3 now.  If you move it into the sun right when you cut, it shouldn't turn dark but make a light green papery cover.  If it turns a little dark it can still be good, just hit it with some sun like the other guy said.  You might need to cut more, it's really hard to tell with that pic.  I haven't seen the kind of damage you have so I'm not sure it was necessarily spreading in the first place.  Maybe you should wait for a spell and see if it spreads before making more cuts.

Just for clarification, is the window considered direct? If I leave it outside moisture will get it.

The window will filter out some UV but it's still ostensibly direct sunlight.

This is spot on as far as surgery goes, however I believe that most surgery isn't necessary. To use an animal analogy, amputation is only warranted when there is a high risk of a systemic infection developing. I've only had rot bad enough to warrant surgery once in the ~4 years I've been growing cactus, and that was on a weak pheno that I eventually got rid of. My mantra is that trichocereus is incredibly resilient.

I remember reading an article years ago that said glass filters out 99% of UV rays, also that UV rays are bascially what kills mold because it damages their dna making it impossible for them to form new cells.  I'd use sunlight if possible.

I heard that too, but IME they heal in front of a window as well as they heal outside. I'll look into it more, but this just makes me think of sunglasses. Not all sunglasses with glass lenses are rated for UV protection so I dunno. I do agree that outside is best though.

I don't doubt that inside can work well too, I'm just going by what the literature says, I dunno.  In this context when I say UV I am talking about UV-C specifically (the kind that damages skin cells) not UV-A or B.  I'd like to know if you find out anything interesting.

It may be that the remaining is still 1% is enough to kill mold.

Yeah I really have know idea to what extent plain window glass affects UV radiation. There's also tinted glass, double paned inert gas filled stuff. A lot to take into account. It was my high school botany teacher that told me glass blocks out all UV, but I don't think it's that simple. I'm going to dig deep tomorrow.

I know it inhibits it quite a lot in most window situations.

It certainly blocks out some UV, and double panes block out a lot of IR as well. I just want to find out definitively to what extent.
