Claviceps purpurea sclerotium in vitro?
    #2045133 - 10/26/03 05:47 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

There's a discussion about this on the hive, and I was wondering if anyone has tried to form sclerotia by starving or cold shocking the mycelium on a solid rye substrate. It seems like the mycelium forms sclerotia in a parasitic manner in the ovary of rye, but is it impossible to just expose it to adverse conditions to try and get sclerotia?

Thanks,

It has yet to be done succesfully by pharmaceutical companies with oodles of cash and equipment.

Just think about how nice that would be? I would not have to wait another five years to get a fake hit again.....God dammit.

Lol -- I wouldn't actually eat the ergot, unless you want you arms and legs to fall off (and, oh yeah -- die.)

Funny story -- this guy in the 1600's was so convinced that ergot was not the cause of ergotism he ate a cup full of ergot. Needless to say he died the next day (and probably had one hell of a trip....) (out of a mycotoxins textbook)

Well one might live after proper medical treatment and they might also learn to get along quite nicely without fingers and toes.

Check out this link:

Ergot

I consistently find ergot sclerotia in my bulk organic rye bags. Once I tried cold shocking, surface sterilizing and fruiting them on water agar, but to no avail. It was a single experiment that did not work, and is well worth looking into further.

I don't know if Pharm companies do, but birdseed companies sure seem to   (although in all honestly I never truly id'd the sclerotia, the cheap birdseed was full of sclerotia of some type).
