The tidal forces on earth would be immense. The oceans would probably rise and fall by thousands of feet every couple hours. The atmosphere, if it could even survive such forces, and not be sucked right of the planet, would bulge so much due to tidal forces, the pressure would be all over the place. Actually none of this would probably happen because the tidal forces would have been so intense, earth's rotation would have stopped completely in relation to Jupiter and one side of the earth would always face Jupiter the same way one side of the moon always faces earth.

That wouldn't even begin to make sense.  The moon is supposedly just a small piece of the Earth reconfigured.  Jupiter would be the earth and earth would be the moon.

nothing to contribute to this thread really.

just wanted to say that "ascoolas" avatar of space ghost was going to the beat of my music, and i watched spaceghost dance for 3 mins.

ummm planets are cool n stuff.

jupiter is also a planet.

and it is rather large from what i understand.

I think it'd be pretty sweet to orbit a Jovian planet 8) Saturn would be my choice if I got to pick though.

The first, biggest star you see in the sky near morning, the morning star, is Venus from what I've been told by an intellectual buddy.

That sounds like the most un-intellectual criteria ever developed.

"Yeah, you know. The first star. Near morning it's the morning star. The first bright star you see in the sky near morning. That's venus, always. Second star to the right, and stright on til morning, Wendy"

The earth would be sucked inside the gas mass of Jupiter due to its enormous gravity and we would end end being straight into Jupiter's core where earth would crushed in tiny little melted pebbles.

Awesome right!

While many people believe the moon revolves around the earth, in reality the earth and the moon revolve around the earth-moon systems's center of gravity, which happens to be located near the surface of the earth on a line that connects the center of the earth with the center of the moon. If one could observe the earth and moon revolving around the sun, it would appear the the earth wobbles in its orbit.

Not as long as it's a stable orbit, the moon is roughly the distance that Jupiter's moons are away from it.

Jupiter would exert less than 0.1g (~0.6N) at that distance. Day to night weight change of about 12%...could make for some fun.

F = G*M1*M2 / d^2

d=7E7 m (Jupiter's radius) + 3.85E8 m (Distance to moon) = 4.55E8 m

M1 = 1.898E27 kg (Jupiter mass)
M2 = 1 kg (Force per kg)
G= 6.6726E-11

Tides would be stronger, especially when aligned with both the Sun and Jupiter, but manageable. The day/night cycle could be very strange, depending on day length and orbital period.

Sorry to wreck all of the doomsday scenarios. If Jupiter were 10 times its mass, things would be ugly.

Can planets in other solar systems be detected by the wobble effect on their star or would that be too small?  I know they are finding planets by the light they block when they pass in front of a star but I'd think with sensitive equipment and some fancy math one could possibly map solar systems by the wobble of a star.  Maybe we are not there yet.  I've heard of twin stars being found like this.  Also it would be cool to find black holes paired up in spinning around eachother wreaking havoc, if such a thing is even feasible.
