I Bought a lock for my front door saved £90!!!
    #20413200 -

So i just discovered how much it costs to have your locks changed, in the region of £100+ Seriously what kind of a rip off is this when it isn't an emergency!?  i should become self employed and do this if is this is the price people are charging to put a £10 lock in plus about 10 mins labour.

Extortion has a whole new meaning!

A locksmith is a trade.  Try bringing a plumber or electrician to your place.

With a tradesman, comes minimum call outs and high hourly rates.

Here in my town, the hourly rate for a locksmith is $80/hour.  So to have a locksmith arrive on site, costs $80 and that gives you 15 minutes.  That is called a minimum call out.

After that, they bill in 15 minute increments.  The average rekey of a lock or two, takes about 15 minutes or under.  So you would be charged the $80, plus a couple dollars for new keys, plus tax.

So yes, to have a tradesmen come out and rekey a lock or two, it is going to cost you around $100.  A plumber and electricians minimum call out is well over those rates in my city.

Or you could buy new SHIT weiser or schlage locks for $25-50.

Or you could take the two screws off yourself, remove the lock and bring it down to the locksmith or some other hardware store that rekeys locks and you are looking at paying around $20 to $30 bucks.

Seems pretty fair to me.

I used to be a locksmith and would just smile when people complained about the price.  Especially after hours.  Try getting a plumber to your house for a 1am emergency and see how much that costs.  We would be half that cost and people would still bitch and rage

i've bought the lock already after seeing how easy it is to replace it was that or ask the landlord to take care of it but tbh i dont trust him, i knew it would cost a certain ammount but when the first guy i called told me how much i practicly was speechless.
Im pretty sure someone has access to my place after noticing a few things when returning to my flat that were out of place, could be memory but id rather be safe.

I think you may need to re-read the pub rules with all these "lessons" you speak of :smirk:

No need for insults and such a defensive stance.  I would suggest editing your post before you get a warning.

I should re key locks, I'm not a locksmith but I learned how to do it. You just need simple tools to open most locks, some are bitches and need a special tool but your basic deadbolt lock can be rekeyed in a few minutes and the use of a few pins. I just happen to have a box of pins too.

Changing for another lock is so easy its a sin. I should put in a craigs list ad and pick up some easy money. I wouldn't even ask $100, it would be $50 and hope they don't feel ripped off. Do 10 in an afternoon and pick up a cool $500.

If you possess locksmith tools and are not a registered lock smith it is a crime almost everywhere. Like having a slim jim if you are not a tow truck driver. It's considered a burglary tool. Putting up an ad on Craigslist offering locksmith services if you are not a real one is also likely a crime in your area.

I was a bonded locksmith for 4 years.  Getting my security license involved fingerprints, handprints and background check.

Very cool trade though.  I miss it sometimes

You are a bit misinformed. For one thing, they sell slim jims openly in stores or you can order off ebay. There is no law against having locksmith tools, there is a crime involving possession of burglary tools but it requires evidence of intent to commit breaking and entering. A screwdriver, hammer, prybar, etc could be considered burglary tools. If you are caught prowling a neighborhood trespassing, peeking in windows, and have tools that could facilitate breaking and entering, including locksmith tools, you may be charged with a crime. We are not talking about that.

If some asshole city passes an ordinance that you can't change locks without a license, then fine but that is not common, I have never heard of it. If someone opens a locksmith shop then a business license will likely be needed same as any business. Tons of people work out of their homes but unless they have a sign in front and people complain, nothing happens.

Like I already mentioned before him...in MANY areas, not all, it IS illegal to possess certain locksmith tools and lock picks.  You cannot even buy them without a valid security license.  Canada in particular is very sticky about this.

But lots of the areas in the states even have lockpicking competitions for the common folk.

So again...its all on your location.

and as mentioned by me earlier, you cannot do locksmithing in many areas of the world without the proper security licenses

You are slightly misinformed

I think you meant "almost everywhere in canada" Big difference. Plus the fact you haven't established that its a crime even in Canada.

Well first...I didnt say that

Second..I was a full fledged locksmith who attended all sorts of conferences around canada bub.  Im pretty sure I know my past trade fairly well.

In b.c. you cannot buy or possess certain tools and picks without proper security license.

Deal with the facts
