Eczema
    #20241200 -

So as a kid I had eczema and it largely went away once I hit my teens. Over the last few years I've had it off and on though much milder than when I was a kid. Over maybe the last 6 months though it's really flared up and right now it's worse than I've ever had it in my life. It covers most of my face and back and is on all areas of my body.

I know it's a long shot asking for advice here but I've got nothing to loose, so does anyone have anyone experience or advice?

I've been seeing doctors and dermatologists and I've tried steroid creams of varying strengths as well as light treatment. Right now (as of the last 3 days) I'm applying coconut oil a few times a day and doing a salt water wash once a day or every second day (for my face)

Dealing with it right now as well. In my experience the dermatologists haven't helped at all. Diet has been key for me. Eliminate all processed foods, sugar, and white flour first of all. Do that for a week and see if it gets any better. I can almost assure you it will. Good luck.

Take cold showers, they've worked for me, they really have. I was using everything from steroid creams to aloe vera before I discovered cold showers, and they don't work nearly as well. After a lifetime of discomfort, It's been such a relief to hit upon such a cure (yes, a cure!)

Give it a week's trial and come back to me with your results, I'm interested.

edit -  I should add that I've stopped applying after shave and deodorants, even soaps. Be wary of anything remotely like those.

http://allergies.about.com/u/ua/atopicdermatitiseczema/atopicdermtxua.01.htm

'I had an explosive case of eczema a few years back and was horribly swollen, lichenized and bleeding. I suffered increasingly for months and then figured out that cold temperatures seemed to temporarily relieve the itching. I took a cold shower. It felt healing. I started taking the coldest showers possible, and I could literally feel my skin healing so I started doing it every two to three hours round the clock. I took 5 to 7 cold showers a day for about 2 months and didn't take a hot shower for 5 months. The eczema went away as fast as it could. To this day whenever my skin gets dry and itchy and I can feel the eczema coming on, I take a cold shower. I also use moisturizers. Your skin is overheated and dried out! You can counterbalance this with aggressive cooling and moisturizing.'

Seems I'm not alone in this!

Another quote - 'At the beginning of May I had my first cold shower, just to see what it was like. I’ve lost count of how many cold showers I’ve taken since then, but I can tell you how many warm showers I’ve taken since my first cold shower: Zero.

My skin is softer and smoother, my eczema has cleared up, and I no longer have dry scalp. AND I start each day feeling brave and ready to take on the world. What’s not to love about that??'

Thanks for the responses guys.

I'm not so sure it's diet related since I eat pretty well anyway and don't notice any correlation between flare-ups and changes in diet. But it can't hurt to try and completely avoid processed foods while I get this under control.

Cold showers.. hmm. I'll have to give this a go. The only problem is that it's winter here atm and we don't have heating. Maybe I can start with room temperature showers, today and yesterday I noticed that the warm water in the shower was stinging my face really bad. It was so bad today I couldn't let the water touch my face and had to clean my skin with a facewasher instead.

I'd say the most annoying bad is the way my face feels 100% of the time. I can forget about the way I look but I can't ignore the tightness and stinging/burning that is with me all day long. I can't even move my eyebrows because the skin around them is so hard and tight.

All that said the red has ever so slightly cleared a little bit today, although the burning is just as bad. Hmm, I'm seeing a new doctor tomorrow morning too. I'm not hopeful much will come of that but I'm suspecting this flare-up could be a rebound/withdrawal from stopping long-term use of steroid-creams. I just hope it starts clearing faster because at this rate it's going to be months before it's under control.

Sorry for the long post guys (though part of me wants to keep ranting  ), any more suggestions will be appreciated. Definitely going to stop any hot showers.

The colder the better :p Gradually ease your way under it. One leg, One arm, etc etc. It honestly works!

what sort of facewasher? anything with chemicals in must be avoided. it's so bad for eczema. Hot water is also terrible for skin, dries it out completely..

Well I think I found the problem; topical steroid cream withdrawal.

So naturally I was never told about steroid addiction while being prescribed stronger and stronger creams to combat dermatitis symptoms. But it's a thing. And the the withdrawal is horrible and apparently it lasts months - years.

Intense burning skin, areas that ooze fluid, red and super dry skin, hard "plastic" skin, swelling, insomnia, blurred vision, low energy levels are a few of the withdrawal symptoms that I've read about and am currently experiencing. There are many others I thankfully am not dealing with like intense itching.

http://www.itsan.org/eczema_questions_answered.html
I did lots of research and this page covers the topic pretty well, though there are more scientific explanatory pages out there that explain how this happens.

Looks like I'll just have to wait this out for a while. I really wish I had strong pain medication or benzos right now. Haven't been getting more than a few hours sleep each night, am constantly anxious and dealing with a constant burning sensation on my face comparable to the worst sunburn I've ever had, if not worse.

This really sucks balls, I'm pretty down about it right now

Not to mention this all happened because of the "professional advice" of a dermatologist.

Oh and after seeing a new doctor this morning I'm also on antibiotics now because the skin has a secondary infection from being so raw and exposed.

Hmm I'm going to be very cautious with even the most common pharma drugs from now on. I still can't believe this all happened at the advice of a skin specialist! It's beyond a joke.

end rant (though once again I could go on)/

tldr ; fuck you western medicine

If it is not in severe stage then you may use home made remedies or else consult the doctor and move forward with the suggestion of a doctor.

Buy Retin A

It's improved a lot in the 2 and a half weeks since I made this thread. It's still all over my body but it's no longer stupidly painful and it's not giving me as bad insomnia. It still sucks and is annoying but oh boy has it improved so I should not complain and be happy for that fact :smile2:
