Asante - by the sound of your post, you are buying, rather than making kefir milk? I am interested in this process and might try to make some in the near future.

I also suffer from a bowel problem, though mine is stool that is too loose. Leads to lots of wiping, among other problems, but I wonder what kind of shitty microbes are in my gut that cant process the rather normal/healthy diet that im eating. Anyways - is the injecting into your bum thing something you have to keep doing - or do you think that once the kefir bacteria has claimed the territory you can go back to just drinking it?

fiber like metamucil might help you.
if you google marilyn the kefir lady she will mail you grains for cash. You can get a small amount for $15.

You can get it in the grocery store, both kefir and kambuchi. I'm not sure what the advantage over yogurt is. Both are bacteria growing in milk, yogurt often has fruit in it too. If its a special kind of bacteria the yogurt makers would find out and use it too.

I've found that taking resistant starch every day has a beneficial effect on gut flora. The starch does not break down like ordinary starch, its food for the good bacteria.

I think they don't have to compete with eachother over what's the best ferment.
they'll all provide you with different yeasts, bacteria and enzymes. biodiversity is the key to balance.

For me, the difference is all about the smoothies.

Kefir has an tangy flavor that just takes my smoothies to the next level which I can't seem to get with yogurt.  Haven't tried a kombucha smoothie but that taste is not as quaffable for me as kefir.

Resurrecting this bad boy! Asante, I have been thinking about you!

My friend recently gave me kefir grains, and I have fallen in love with the drink! I pretty much never bought milk until now, and am drinking a gallon every two weeks, albeit, Kefir milk.

It is so delicious, and yes the health benefits seem to be many. Anyone looking to try this, I suggest getting grains and making your own. This way you choose the milk your grains will feed on, you control the fermentation (and thus flavor), and get more probiotic strains than most produced kefirs can offer.
