Can you use too much spore solution?

I know that when inoculating BRF or grains in jars, the more spore solution you use, the faster colonization will be. But can you use too much? How much would be too much for 1/2 pints, pints, and quarts?

if you use too much it will change the water content of the substrate. i think one syringe for 6 jars would speed it up quite a bit without adding too much water...correct me if im wrong.

Yeah -- you'd need a lot of spore solution to upset a jar -- probably more than half a whole syringe per jar.

So, how much of a difference in colonization speed do you think using 3cc's instead of 1-1.5cc's for a pint jar make?

i used 3 cc on one jar...it colonized fully in 2 weeks...the others with 1cc-1.5cc colonized in 3 weeks...i guess it is worth it if ya have alot of spore solution

Well my cat has a crazy notion that if she alters the amount of water by making the substrate a little dry then using about half a syringe on a 1/2 pint cake, her cake should grow at an accelerated speed. By then again she's a little off.

well what your cat is saying makes sense....i would was thinking about making a ton of solution using the karo tek and than switching the solution for water.....tell your cat to start posting some results when he/she gives it a shot

Well, a friend of mine says that it may seem faster, as there are more innoculation points. He says he reduced the 'norm' of 1 CC per injection site(which totals 4CC per jar), to 2-3 DROPS (not CC's) just drops per injection site, and he says he's had terriffic luck. 100% colonization in 14 days. It is his opinion that myc growth has to do more with parameters, than how much solution you use. He has now innoculated over 100 jars with the same syringe!! And still has 1/4 of it left! You try!

The more spores you have in the jar, the more spores their are to turn into mycelia. I'd recommend just making your spore syringes REALLY dark, rather than using more liquid.

I was wondering about this, with more spores you are going to get more dikaryons, which will result in more, smaller networks? Can multiple dikaryons of the same strain interconnect to form a fruit body? If not I would expect more but smaller fruits from dark syringes, and possible more aborts? EDIT: When I say strain, I don't mean a 'pure strain' like you get from cloning a fruit, but say from spores from the same cap.

You're going to get dikaryons in almost every case, anyway -- unless you are only injecting like 1-5 spores, which would probably take a shitload of time to colonize. You're adding at least tens of thousands of spores (that number was pulled out of my ass, but you get the idea) so you'll almost always have "mating." The dikaryotic hyphae will outrun the few monokaryotic ones that might be there that are incompatable.

Yeah, what Micro said!
You only need 2 spores to innoculate (like herb, supposing one is weaker), so I read in the Shroomery. So my cousins cousin figured that if spores are microscopic, than there should be that ass# in at least ONE drop of solution. He's not as learned as the guy above, but he said the amount of spores in a single drop (the ass#) should be more than plenty. Although he was told to use one CC per site, his syringe was in ML, so he didn't know how to convert it. Seriously, if you have what he likes to call a 'pregnant syringe' , try just a couple of drops, and could you let me know how it goes?!? Peace!
