Decriminalization of pot in DC blocked by Congress
    #20191885 -

http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-politics/house-republicans-block-funding-for-dc-marijuana-decriminalization/2014/06/25/d6854ba8-fc6e-11e3-8176-f2c941cf35f1_story.html
Quote:
House Republicans on Wednesday blocked funding for a new D.C. law that would eliminate the threat of jail time for pot possession, leaving the fate of one of the country’s most liberal decriminalization efforts unclear.

The D.C. law, which is to take effect next month, makes possession in the nation’s capital punishable by a fine of just $25.

...

Harris’s amendment, or “rider” on a a multibillion-dollar spending bill, would preclude the District from spending any money “to enact or carry out any law, rule, or regulation to legalize or otherwise reduce penalties associated with the possession, use, or distribution of any” federal controlled substance.

It was one of several riders on D.C. spending House Republicans passed Wednesday, the others including a prohibition on D.C. spending its own money on abortions for poor residents and one cutting funds for D.C. police officers to drive their cruisers to and from their homes if they live outside the city.

DC residents have no say in their own affairs if a few people in congress disagree. The city is essentially a colony of the United States. DC residents have the highest per capita federal tax burden in the country, yet have no congressional representation.

Yup. All laws passed in DC are subject to congressional review.

Back in the late 90s, DC had a medical marijuana measure on the ballot. Some asshole Republican in congress didn't like this, and blocked the city from COUNTING the votes.

a rider is a little something tossed into a bill that has nothing to do with
the bill, sometimes the rider is what gets the bill blocked but usually it's
the remaining content as is this case in which republicans are voting down
spending bills such as this one. most times these riders are tossed in as
political smoke and mirrors so that one party or another can say the other
side blocked a bill that would have done X

now here's the fact of the matter, the decriminalization bill wasnt blocked
by anyone, it passed, it imposes a $25 fine instead of jail (at least for
the first offense) but someone tossed some shit into this SPENDING BILL to
supposedly fund this decriminalization crap which is nonsense since the
fines would be collected with or without added funding

maybe koods can explain why DC needed more money to eliminate jail time
and fine people $25 for possession of marijuana since as I understand
things, fewer people in jail means less money spent on the jails and fines
mean more revenues.... ever wonder why this country is in so much debt?

“The federal government has a unique relationship with the city of Washington, D.C.,” said Rep. Ander Crenshaw (R-Fla.). “We, the federal government, pay for the city’s courts, we pay to house their prisoners, and I think we pay for a few other things . . . so the Constitution says we have the power to exercise — in all cases — over this District. And that is what we do.”

Individuality is a joke in America. Should weed be a state or a federal issue? Why not an individual issue? If you, as an individual, want to smoke weed then go ahead, if not, then just as well.

The idea that weed is going to made federally legal anytime soon is a gullible notion, who's going to do it, Obama? He cant even wipe his ass without it turning into the legislative equivalent of WW3. Hillary, ban individuality in favor of a health obsessed community oriented utopia of man-children, Clinton? I don't fucking think so. And don't even get me started on the money grubbing sub-humans in the legislature, don't ever expect anything from them.

More likely a republican will be elected, as a reactionary backlash against the social growth of the last eight years, then the people in Washington and Colorado can stand back and watch while the national guard rips down their weed stores, burns all their products and likely carts half the population off to jail. That will be a sad fucking day here in America, but at least we will all be suffering together again, in evenly spread, uniform oppression.

I think if you're still thinking it's a republican vs democrat subject you've missed the plot.  Without getting all :tinfoil: on everybody can we at least agree that there are anti cannabis lobbyists fucking the legalization movement up right now.  Privatized prisons, the Big Pharmaceutical companies, Tobacco, textile industries...  This is a much bigger problem than democrat/republican.  This is a fucked politician problem to which the only cure will likely either be revolution or years and years of our personal freedoms being raped.
Look all I'm saying is look at the civil rights era.  They don't hand freedoms out people.  This is dope-ism, and it's not going away until people aren't afraid to talk to their neighbour honestly about smoking a joint.  Nancy Regan did a number on the American Psyche. It's a fucking shame how some people just fall in line like sheep.

no, it's a bunch of dickheads on capitol hill playing politics with the
media pushing their favorites.

maybe you can show is this anti cannibis lobby and it's strength, if you
believe that with fewer than 10% of prisons being privatized makes for
strength or that big pharma and tobacco isnt ready to capitalize on
marijuana then you're fooling yourself. as for the textile industry, it's
no longer in the US, there's some cotton but it takes little to move from
growing one to the other

I live in a decriminalized state, it's retarded. I mean it is nice that they can't jail you for simple possession until your third UPM, and even then it's 15 days Max. The entire thing is a sham, The police still hate weed and if they want to they will just throw other bullshit charges at you until you're buried in the dirt. They will make up a fake DWAI, or a fake endangerment charge, or a fake disorderly conduct charge.

The only acceptable Marijuana policy is one where you can purchase weed legally from a store, without any restrictions to quality or quantity, and the police can't say or do a fucking thing about it. Any other form of marijuana policy props up black market dealers while jailing honest, innocent people, and preventing any weed money from finding its way into the tax cycle.

Well I happen to live in the deep south buddy.  Half the prison system in my state is privatized.  And All of Louisiana State Correctional facilities are corporate run. It's the largest police state in the world. And I not only know people that've been in those places but I've seen video on some Cannabis doc on hulu of guards in those place treating people like dogs.  Most, in there for non-violent drug charges like cannabis.  I'm not really sure where your getting your numbers on privatized prisons, but where I'm at it's basically sanctioned slavery.
As far as "fooling myself" for big pharma.  Why would you legalize a cure when you're making money hand over fist with treatments that hardly work in the first place or in some cases (so called "pain therapy") make the situation worse.  Not only that; We're talking Cannabis here.  Something that can easily be decentralized unlike say opium or cocaine (both lesser scheduled drugs).  Do you really believe it's in their interest to make something like that legal for you to grow in your back yard?  Who's fooling who's self?

Far as tobacco; sure Phillip Morris may get a piece because they've bought up land in the emerald triangle.  But Patents have already been issued for certain cannabis related things since back in the early 70's and others already have their hands in that pie.  Plus It's gonna take a while before they'll be able to make it to where "Farmer John" can't grow and sell his own cannabis like they made it illegal to grow and sell your own tobacco.
More time, more lobbyists, more money, more headache.
