I found lava rocks at home depot, but they were nasty, i thought perlite would be cleaner. HOw many inches of perlite do I need and also how much water? do I need to sterilize the air curtain/perlite? also, do I need to make a filter box for the air filter so it gets sterile air? thanks!

if you use lava rocks just wash them well first.

put in about 3 inches of perlite and 2 inches of water...more or less.

dont bother sterilising the perlite, just add peroxide to the water.

i use a filter box to house my airpump but i know that alot of people dont, and they have no problems.

Get lava rocks at Lowes in the Lawn n' Garden section. If you're patient pick out the small rocks--it's a bitch repositioning rocks cause you used big ones and your cakes won't sit on em.

Perlite will work theoretically but it might end up splattering everywhere when the bubbles come up through.

Vermiculite wouldn't work anyways so don't fret about that... but how'd you make substrate without it? Or am i being presumptive and you're casing with something other than verm?

For the Poorman's Pod lava rocks are better.

May I ask, what's so better about lava rocks?

lava rocks are cleaner then perlite which tends to become a sticky messy pain in the ass.

I find lava rocks to be 10x as aesthetically pleasing. They provide a beautiful red contrast to your snowy-white mycelium, whereas perlite is just all white (more of the same... BORING!).

Another bonus of this color... the white perlite would reflect a lot more light, possibly causing your babies to be unsure of which way to grow as light is coming from both top and bottom. You don't want to confuse your babies do you? DO YOU?!

A big bag of lava rocks is $5 and you can boil and reuse them time after time after time. Perlite would be a pain in the ass to boil and reuse.

Here is how to make the pod

pod

use about 4 inches of lava rock and 3 to 3 1/2 inches of water.

Replace the geolite with lava rock in the pic.

I've set up a pod with lava rocks, and it can't seem to keep humidity over 80%
the rocks don't look particularly porous. Maybe I have the wrong thing? It was a big bag from home depot, red rocks approximately 1" diameter. would it make a difference to maybe put in a few inches of perlite, with a top layer of lava rocks to keep it neat?
