What would be considered the lowest power setting on a microscope to get a good look at spores? Would 200x be enough? reason I am asking I found a cheap USB microscope and that is the higest I can go with it..I have another that will do 1200x but it needs a good cleaning..I am sorry if this is the wrong fourm to post this in..If so please move it to the proper one...
Thanks in advance!

200x should be fine -- spores are really big and they're dark, so you don't even need to stain them (if they're coming from a sporeprint.)
Depends on how big you want them to look.

What kind of power do you need to measure?

200x should be enough for measuring. You'll need more than that to view internal structures and spore ornamentation.
These are cubensis spores at 675x:

I mostly use mine to look to see how much bacteria is on the spores before use. I'm not sure you can see those at less than 400X. 100X gives you a nice view of the mycelia and is plenty to see the clamp connections.

I have this ancient 100X-600X russian microscope, is it worth cleaning up and using? I assumed it was too small.

No, it's not too small. I think you hardly need more than that.

The best thing for cleaning it is the air spray.
You'll need a stage micrometer or something of known micrometer size. (Don't ask me what could that be) Then take a picture of micrometer and then of the spores at the same magnification. I can measure them for you then...

Make sure to clean the lenses with lens paper, and kodak sells a good cleaning solution.
If there's still crap stuck to the glass after a good cleaning, cleaning *very carefully* with xylene can do wonders, but don't get any outside of the glass area or you'll melt the glue and the lens will fall apart.
It's a lot easier to do all this under a dissection microscope, if you can.
Usually a hemacytometer is used to measure things; it sucks ni rulers go down to that size
