Micrometer ideas?
    #2542198 - 04/09/04 04:15 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I am hoping to obtain a microscope soon.

I would like to be able to accurately measure my specimens. A micrometer is what I need. I checked out some prices and it blew me away...$200...ouch!!

Does anyone know where I might obtain a cheaper micrometer?

Joshua

I bought this stage micrometer for 19 euro: link

I has a 100 micrometer scale, which is not much but it was enough to measure cubensis spores with computer:

cynmar.com

They sell both the ocular micrometer (get the smallest increment size) and also the stage micrometer to calibrate the ocular micrometer.

My scope ends up having an ocular micrometer with each increment being 1.25 micrometers.

I don't know if this is a useful tip or not Joshua...

2nd hand anything over here (Japan) is considered rubbish (my friend bought a 6 yr old Miubishi sedan for US$100 last year and you have to pay money to have a 2 yr old TV removed when you upgrade)

If you can come up with a simple (MUST be simple) ad, I could ask my wife to translate it and post it on a Uni or mycology website here...

If there were any responses, I could deal with them from this end for you...

PM me if you think this might help.

I don't quite understand what you are getting at about second hand.

I think I will be fine, the link Teonan provided has very reasonably priced products which I can afford.

Thank you much for the offer though.

No probs at all...

Most Japanese families have 'junk rooms' full of all sorts of things that would be sold in any other country, but are worth nothing here (there is almost no such thing as a 2nd hand store in Japan... they do exist, but are very rare...)

Folks here buy a new one of everything every 2nd year (you will see 1 yr old vacuume cleaners, blenders and all sorts of stuff in the rubbish... things that could be sold for good money still in Australia. Many people don't throw them out though - you have to pay money to do so - they just throw all that stuff in their 'junk room').

I'm sure there would have to be someone whose son had a microscope from uni... or someone who had bought a newer, flasher one (The challenge would be to find said person...).

you don't need a micrometer... what you need is a recticle... a recticle is a piece of glass with very fine lines etched onto it, for measuring what you see under a microscope.... theyre a lot cheaper than micrometers...
