I've also always dreamt of a band that had clean California punk (Like pennywise, or bad religion) but more positive and way, way fast. Like if you slowed it down in a computer you'd understand it fine, but as is it's like a million miles an hour. Condense a 2.5 minute song to like 40 seconds. Way way way fast. I'd buy the fuck out of that.

Thanks for pointing this out to me stereo, I already love it. I love that it's ska, I love that I have no fucking idea what they are saying, and I think they are way hot. there's nothing sexier then androgynous girls with ties on.

Well they definitely got the 2tone goin on. I dated a Chinese chik who was the drummer of an all girl Ska band. They were pretty good. Dammit every year I miss warped tour because of work. :psycrankey:

The importance of an instrument changes from genre to genre.

A lot of my friends play death metal, a lot of the bands don't have bass players. Generally the bass player is playing the same riff as the guitarist, with a couple of variations, so a bass player isn't necessary. Preferred? Yes.

Jazz, blues,country, folk, reggae, ska, rock, etc. are all genres that MUST(there are exceptions of course) have some kind of bass line. In those three genres especially, the bass and drums, aka the rhythm section, is the most important part of the band. They're driving along, carrying the groove, and the bass player is also riffing, or walking to the chords.

If you took an average drummer and bassist, and put them together with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, it wouldn't sound right, maybe even terrible. The rhythm section really does make the band. Its not only skill, musicians have to be able to connect and get on a similar level, which doesn't just work with any other musician.

The Doors pulled off having no bass player a lot of the time because Ray Manzarek's organ had foot pedals for bass notes, and would play the bassline.


All of that to say bass players are extremely important, not lazy or anything. I'm not even a bass player, I just have a lot of respect for them. There are plenty of lazy musicians though, regardless of instrument.

Two different instruments. Guitar is no easier nor harder. I know good guitar players who pick up a bass and have no rhythm to hold a pocket. As a bass player, I can laugh with this thread with no offense taken, it's all good, but in all seriousness, each instrument is different and no more difficult or simple. I play guitar too, it's just secondary, not primary like bass is. It depends what you're playing, one song on Guitar can be simpler than another song on Bass, and vice versa.

I can assure you though, I chose bass because it appealed to me more. It's the connector of the melody and rhythm, it's the mid point between drums and guitar. It's the rhythmic melody. When you're playing music like Funk, RnB, Jazz and what not, bass is where it's at.

Look at the Bass tab for most Primus songs it's 3 or 4 notes played on different strings in different ways. But then again Primus was composed of all prodigy freaks of nature.

I learned to play guitar originally, then went to "band camp" and these guys were forming a band and wanted a bass player, so I picked up a bass.

In band scenarios I generally play bass, but I play guitar better. I also play drums, but I have all the bass gear and I don't mind playing bass. Can have just as much fun on that  :thumbup:

I got that Guitar Rig 4 with Kontrol and run my bass through my laptop back into my amp for some fucking awesome effects. Like playing a whole new instrument

I think, if you're serious about music and rock n roll and writing and/or recording, etc, you should learn both bass and guitar, and maybe even drums. Bass is important for lying the groundwork for a song. If you want to write some great metal or some other form of rock, there is rarely a better starting point for the writing process than the bass. Write the groove first, and everything else comes ever so easier.

I played guitar for 10 years before I started playing bass. So in my case, no.

I think it's easy to go unnoticed on bass and that's why people get away with underplaying, having less talent. But to be noticed as a truely great bassist requires a lot of skill and talent and a fundamental understanding of music theory that your average asshole noodling in his bedroom on guitar doesn't have.

First off, they're two different instruments with two different string thicknesses. Sure, you can fake it a bit in a punk or metal band, even if you don't know all your chords. But to make a bass sound worth a shit, it takes hours of playing and conditioning your fingers. Providing my own take on it: if one has more hand strength and less dexterity, one may be more inclined to play bass. If one has good hand strength, but better dexterity, one may be better at playing guitar. Rhythm guitar is essentially a bridge between the two. Personally speaking, my fingers are fat like sausages so I have less flexibility. It doesn't stop me from playing guitar and drilling rhythms and chords, but I usually play bass more. But it's pretty tough to argue that people who play bass don't want to put the effort into learning guitar when you take into some of the greats, such as Lemmy, Les Claypool, Peter Steele, Roger Waters, Geezer Butler, Klaus Fluoride, and Mike Starr.

I hate it when people say things like "sure, you can fake it a bit in a metal band"... you can fake it just as well in any other type of band, as in a metal band, and plenty of metal musicians put HUGE amounts of effort into technicality. Sounds rather ignorant when people say shit like that.
