Where lightning comes from is a little more complicated then just saying it comes from a cloud, or it comes from the ground. Think of it light a static carpet shock, when you touch the doorknob, is it you who shocked the door knob or is it the knob who shocked you?

What happens in a thunderstorm is an area of high static charge is moving over the landscape, Often it is a strong negative charge in the cloud with a strong positive charge being produced opposite on the ground. As these charges move across the landscape objects can become charged, this is why some people report their hair standing on end prior to lightning striking. The charge can create streamers that come off from objects, this is sometimes referred to as st elmo's fire. If these streamers connect with the main streamer that is coming down out of the cloud there will be a lightning bolt. When the connect however I do believe the electrons actually flow from the earth to the cloud, even though the bolt came down from the cloud the actual electrons that make up the bolt are traveling up into the sky from the ground.  

Here is a good example, you can see two streamers that never connected with the bolt, one on the light pole the other on the tree right next to the main bolt.

Fascinating stuff. Dangerous stuff, you never know where those streamers are going to go and which ones are going to connect. Op is very lucky.
