It took about 100 pictures and a few lightning storms but I finally got a pic of a lightning bolt!
An insane storm came through Winnipeg tonight and I took about 30 pictures before getting this one....not too bad....Im going to try to get a cooler one next time.

I turned off the flash and just sat there clicking and clicking until the preview screen finally showed a bolt. Takes forever to catch one Pretty much has to be non stop lightning to have a chance.

An easy way to catch lightning is, if yuou have a camera with adjustable exposure times, set it for the bulb(B) mode. The shutter will then stay open for the whole time you press down on the shutter release button. So just hold it down until a bolt strikes and release it right after. You'll need to put it on the lowest F-stop for the picture. I've been able to catch up to about 10 strikes in less than an hour using this method.

Why would there be people that have tried but never caught a bolt, or have only caught one if they are using this method though?

I love shooting lightning storms. Its not too hard if you are shooting at night. Long exposures while you wait for a bolt is the trick. I have never gotten a good daytime lighting pic. Its tricky when you can only expose for a split second at a time.
Heres a few of the pics I've taken....

The only problem with using a video function to capture stills is that you have to sacrifice quality. My digital camera will shoot video but I like to capture all my stills at full resolution (8MP) and video stills are nowhere close to that. But maybey I'll try a video capture during the next daytime storm and see what I can get.
