broken stem

This is a mushroom someone sent me on aim to ID for him

it was found on grass/barkmulch in BC canada. The cap is 3" in diameter. The stem is about 4-5" long, and thick and fiberous. Not hollow. Very strong typical mushroom/must smell. He's taking a spore print right now, i'll post that later. Bruises a dark brownish color.

Dropped spores were light brown.

It sounds like a Galerina. Identification beyond that will require a microscope.

There are other possibilities, but being sure of what you have there will require using a microscope, and maybe not getting it then.

Happy mushrooming!

The finder also described that mushroom as:

"well the gills appear to be a brownish yello off white but im not sure"

and

"very sticky cap"

In the photo the cap appears too pale and viscid to be a Psilocybe of that size. The spintery non-hollow stem is another giveaway. Brown bruising is a non-psilocybe characteristic too.

Widening of the stem where it joins the cap looks odd too, but that's a pretty variable characteristic.

I'd agree that it's pretty obviously not Ps. cyanescens, which is probably what they were hoping it would turn out to be.

I usually refer people in the Pacific Northwest to this site for photos and descriptions of many regional mushroom species:
