People frame drug usage as a bandwagon
    #19985151 -

Why do they do this?  People who look down on drugs often think the primary reason why people use drugs is because "everyone is doing it."  Their view of the drug user is of someone who just wants to be "cool" and fit-in with a cool party crowd.

That's such a stupid view, because the drug crowd is hardly ever the "in" crowd as they call it.  Most mainstream parties make use of only one drug - alcohol, and sometimes marijuana.  And on RARE occasion, cocaine, ecstasy etc.

The irony in this is that the people who frame drug users as bandwagonners, reject drugs mainly because they are a social taboo - i.e. they are "bandwagonning" by condemning drugs because doing so is the dominant and socially acceptable attitude.

I hate to overuse the word "bandwagon" but it's the best word I can think of at the moment.

Whenever someone talks about drugs and drug users in this way (i.e. they imply that drug users are trying to "fit in" and be cool) I get frustrated because I don't know how to explain this concept to them, or explain how they are being ironic or hypocritical in what they say.

It's not a bandwagon, it's a gateway.

Of course it's a bandwagon. Would you have even got the idea to smoke pot if somebody hadn't given you the idea? Many hemp farmers don't even GAF about the medicinal or psychoactive properties of weed. Some haven't even heard of it.

And that's just a fucking plant. How do you think you'd get your hands on something like amphetamine or valium without somebody else already being on the bandwagon? LSD had a bandwagon from the get-go, even when it was just one person.

What pisses me off is that people base what's a drug on its legality, so weed, cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, are drugs, but alcohol, tobacco, and sugar aren't. Sugar has the same function as other drugs, why not, it releases large amounts of dopamine! Not to mention the fact that the later 3 substances kill WAY more people per year then the first group. Bullshit I say, BULLSHIT!

The more drug users you surround yourself with, the less of an issue it is (to some extent).  Even drug users do it to people that use other drugs.  Potheads do it to people that do anything else, people that use X do it to people that use Y.  Even I refuse to associate with opiate addicts, though that has more to do with my own past problems with opiates.  Everyone needs someone else to look down on to make themselves feel better.

I seriously hope not, how does that make the world a better place? Or do we not care? I know people who look down on me, and you know what, they are hypocritical, ignorant, and uneducated on the matter.

I guess my point is, you really shouldnt look down on anyone for any choice they make, only realize that they might be misguided and need help. Nobody is born perfect.

I think it is a factor sometimes, especially for younger people. Tobacco is a good example. The health risks are well known and it doesn't even have particularly enjoyable effects, but there is this idea that it makes you cool.

I've gotten drunk with homeless people many times, they were just as interesting to hang out with as anyone else (usually have more interesting stories).  I try not to look down on anyone.  I have a harder time not looking down on people that are snobby, but they are just people being people at the end of the day.

Love that post, both of them.

Compassion grows from our realization that our understanding is limited. We are all born equally challenged, and thus me must strive to walk hand in hand.

In response to the OP, it is a bandwagon. Think of how many people started drugs because they either had a peer curiosity, or needed social validation. It's pretty huge. All you can do is smile and accept that their understanding is limited. The only person that knows you, is you. Be compassionate, it's no one's fault for ignorance when this world contains so many individuals and civil partisan societies.

Not really, I do sometimes but usually its either because I'm trying to manipulate someone or because I'm having a mental breakdown.
