a wage increase will kill small business.. doesnt anybody see that?

also, the cost for goods/manufacturing in the us, will skyrocket due to the fact that the owners of said small businesses will be trying to make up for their already alarming losses trying to compete with china.

i dont see how anybody can see any good coming out of this except more money in their check while the company is still around.

people should take responsibilty and make cuts to make ends meet or stride to get a higher paying job. shouldnt rely on the damn government forcing companies to take care of their personal laundry for them.

what is the point of this the purchasing power of a dollar has gone down like 90% since 1960

And minimum wage has gone up like 2%. This whole thing is just ridiculous. I'm voting for the 15 min wage. No doubt about that don't care how skilled you are a lot of people are getting fucked.

No doubt it will pass because we are the majority. Even if your working on the docks making 12.

creating small businesses for everyone to employ themselves with is a crassly ignorant proposal. no one can survive putting themselves in debt, and there would be no competition for them anyways, if everyone did everything the same way.

Course it will. Everything will go up. Many countries have notes that are in the millions. They will just raise the cost. It's sad as fuck. We won't ever win. But it's still nice to see people fighting.

well, i'm sorry to say, this seems like what people are trying to commit to... making everyone work in a way that simply is impossible.

i wasn't saying you were saying that everyone should do anything, period... i was only saying that there is no other outcome other then changing the way that people can decide to live for themselves; which is always a ridiculous proposition.

cost of other overhead that you still have to pay just to keep the damn doors open.. weather or not someone is producing them. what about states where you just cant up and fire someone? the non right to work states? now small business really have more of a hiccup to work out.

im shocked that so many people here are all about more government on this site. i woulda guessed the exact opposite.

in order for that to happen they gotta stop printing the money first.

im going to step out onto a limb here because i have zero knowledge of this. i dont think the minimum wage has any affect on the value of the dollar.

So does the money enter the economy from the government?

It does and it goes to the companies that are paid to provide food for the poor people with jobs lol

no government = no money

great system. everyone has to work for what little they'll have and they'll be thankful for it. there'll still be crime, poverty and ill-will towards each other, but yeah, just so long as we're all a bit freer.

"a wage increase will kill small business"

What does that tell us?

Why can't wages for small businesses go higher today? Wages have been raising for 80 years in the US, why can't they move higher without killing small businesses?

I will tell you why, the US economy has been structurally damaged from globalization, we are now competing with third world labor, not good.

1. Small businesses typically don't rely in third world labor.

2. A minimum wage increase would absolutely not kill small businesses. If I'm paying my employee a dollar more because I have to, so do all the other stores in the strip mall. And that's an extra dollar every hour in those consumers' pockets, which (if I'm a good business owner) will lead them to spend a little more at my store.

Doesn't anybody see that? No? You're just regurgitating the same BS you've heard time and time again without bothering to actually think about it?

The minimum wage has fallen from its peak in 1978, when we had a much stronger working and middle class. So.....your argument just got raped and dumped in the river.

I agree with you that a minimum wage increase would not kill ALL small businesses, but today small businesses are suffering from the tough economic environment, there is no doubt about that fact.

Comparing 1978 to 2014 is beyond stupid, a higher minimum wage (in real terms) is the RESULT of economic prosperity, not the CAUSE.

A strong working middle class is the result of having lots of manufacturing jobs, we don't have that today. A strong working middle class is the result of having a tight labor market, we don't have that today.

For the record, I'm in favor of an increase, I just don't think it really creates economic prosperity.

True, as far as that goes but when you have to pay more in costs, your slim profit margin gets squeezed and may vanish altogether. If you are a struggling business owner, and many of them are, you will have to decide whether to throw in the towel and close your doors because its not worth it anymore or raise prices. Most will raise prices and then the extra dollar in the pocket of the consumer has to be spent on higher prices. Who gains?

Some businesses can easily afford it, some are making money hand over fist but few are in that category. The economy is not doing well and with the exception of a few large businesses like many banks, which obuma bailed out, they can't afford it.

The other argument against it is since it raises prices, those who do not get a raise from the min wage rise will suffer. That includes those on disability, pensions and social security. So the min workers get a small raise which is quickly negated by higher prices, and the sick, disabled and retirees are screwed. Fat chance the administration will approve a meaningful raise in those benefits. Young healthy people are getting a small break at the expense of those who are not.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)
