Digital SLR cameras and festivals
    #19979060 -

I'm going to a festival that does not allow cameras 'with detachable lenses' into the venue. So I'd either be risking it melting in the hot car or getting stolen from my tent/campsite. But obviously I want to have my camera with me to capture the experience, and I'm also going to be doing other camping before and after so the camera's gotta go with me.

How do you guys go about something like this? Leave the DSLR at home? Sneak it into the venue? Lock up your tent with luggage locks? (seems like a false security kind of thing)

Thanks!

Leave it locked in the car. If your camera melts,  you got ripped off.

I used to have a really nice nikon that I spent like 800 bucks on. Ended up selling it. I do most of my adventuring on the go and it was just far too bulky to make it practical for climbing and shit.

DO NOT DO THIS!

It's like putting a sign on your tent saying you have valuables inside and asking someone to take them. I've never had an issue just leaving things in my tent at a festival. I've left my wallet, phone, money, lotsa drugs, etc. in my tent and never had anything stolen from me.

I know what you mean. For me though I'm kinda looking at it as a tool for rendering art. A cell phone in the pocket is convenient and everything but I'm interested in taking it a step further. A guitar is big and bulky to carry around too, but if I wanna play guitar I'm going to have to work with it. If I want to take really good photos I need a good camera.

Same here, but I've never left an expensive piece of electronic equipment in my tent either

I agree about the luggage locks though. Like you're asking someone to come slice your tent open.

Ya understandable. I just never really used it much. It did take fantastic pictures though just wish they weren't so god damn big.

Well if you're a camera aficionado I would have to agree.

But for me, the camera on my phone is great. Got a samsung note 3, the camera is excellent quality for general purpose

That and, well, it's my phone too - so, I really don't have to walk out of the house and think "oh wait, forgot my camera".

I used to work as a photojournalist. Depending on the size of the festival, you might be able to get away with using a fake press pass. Did this a few times when I was freelancing. Do you have any graphic design experience?

That's an interesting idea, but no graphic design knowledge, and I don't know if I'd be confident/knowledgeable enough to pull that off, I'm kinda just getting into photography.

I'll feel a lot better to know I got ripped off when my new camera stops working after baking at 120 degrees in my car all weekend

Honestly I just wouldn't bring it. Good cameras are expensive and I'll be lucky to not lose my phone, keys, or wallet. I

i would never bring a DSLR to a festival.

why? so you can get a good macro shot of the shirtless weirdo's romping around in front of you just before they smash into you and knock your fancy photomagraming machine into the mudd.

pick yourself up a nikon coolpix..
i guarnteee you wont be disappointed, and if on the off chance that you lose it or whatever.. 150. bones aint nothin compared to a 5-8 hundred dollar DSLR,.. and that not even counting detachable lenses's.

i remember this girl in my photography class cracked the screen on her  nikon DSLR without even realizing it on her way to class.

bitch balled her eyes out.

Yeah that's the conclusion I'm kinda coming to. I don't want to risk it. Bummer because it kinda blows photography opportunities before and after that would be really awesome, I'm not so excited about taking pictures of camp/parking lot, it's just that I'm going camping on the lost coast afterward, it's sure to be one of the most beautiful camping trips of my life, and I wanted to take some awesome pictures there :frown:

Me neither. I brought an analog SLR to a festival once or twice; worked like a charm, since their monetary cost is tiny in comparison with an up-to-date DSLR and they tend to be a lot lighter as well.
