Hey fellas..
this mushroom was found in NY and there were a bunch along the base of an uprooted tree. They are fairly small...the biggest one being about 3 1/2 inches tall and with a cap about a little less than an inch. As you can see the half a spore print is like black to a really dark purple almost.

I don't have any personal experiences with them, although some are edible.. also they are used,(or have similar chemical composition) to antabuse, "alcoholic medication", make you very sick after eating if you ingest alcohol.. even days later I believe..

If you plan on eating these wait for TM, Mr. M or another to possitivly ID them for you... Nice pictures, are they digital.???

here's a link for further reading...

they look similar to Coprinus atramentarius..

i beleive those to be Coprinus micaseus.
te determining factor is going to be the presence fo white, mica like granusle on the surface of the cap. soemtimes they are verry small and rquire a magnifying glass to see, and soemtimes they are completely washed off by rain.
C. micaceus is an edible species, though not especialy great. htey need to be eaten before they begin to sporulate and delliquess [turn into black goo] or they will taste hroorible.

wait till you can confirm the presence of the mica and then get a second before comsumption if you are interested in eathin them.

be safe,
good luck and
happy hunting.

peace,
concrete.

Make sure you look for the tiny mica-like (like glitter) granules on the surface of the cap. If those are there, then it's not Coprinus atramentarius, the mushroom being referred to on the MushroomExpert page.

Mica Caps are a good edible, if you get them while the gills are still entirely white. They're certainly better than the Inky Cap (I have tried both).

Happy mushrooming!
