Acne Scars
    #19808288 -

I've developed an extremely unhealthy obsession with the state of my skin. I've had moderately bad facial, chest, and back acne since I was around 16 years old. Since then, it's gotten way better. I mean, it's not smooth and perfect like some people, but most people tell me its barely noticeable.

Recently though, I had a bad outbreak on my face that I've only really gotten under control in the past two weeks. The scars aren't huge, but the pores are clearly irritated and there's a bunch of red discolored marks. I can't explain to you guys how self-conscious these marks make me. My friends and family tell me its really not bad, but I think I've sort of gotten to the point where I focus all my stress and anxiety onto my face and it gives me horrific panic attacks.

I'm back using a retinal again which helped clear up the scars left from the earlier years although it takes so long to see progress.

Anyone have any strategies for dealing with this kinda stuff? I mean both the acne and the mental anxiety I'm inflicting on myself. It's getting out of control:confused:

I deal with that shit, too, and the best thing I've noticed for me to do is just leave it alone. Everytime I seem to pick at it, makes it worse and take longer to heal. Right now I have some residual red marks I want to go away; my derm told me that applying a sunscreen everyday will help fade them (as they can be irritated by the sun). Also drink lots I water, low alcohol, low caffeine, exercise, etc to keep down inflammation. This shit is temporary, even though it feels like forever. You may want to try a concealer, if it bothers you badly enough.

Thanks for the reply.

Yea I pretty much follow everything you said. Assuming your not a guy, but one of the worst parts for me is not being able to shave my beard. I can grow a beard, it just looks really scuzzy, especially since I got pretty long hair, just end up looking like a bum. But ya, I haven't shaved in a month and I've been using duac gel during the day and a retinal at night, finally looking better, just a couple pimples left.

Once the last few are gone I'm gonna be so tempted to shave but it always seems to make the scars look worse. Might just wait till the end of April. Just gonna have to be walking around looking like a dirty hippie:rolleyes: guess I shouldn't care

Personally if I don't shave for about 4-5 days I always break out.  Shaving keeps my skin way clearer.

Honestly it's sort of lose-lose situation for me. I think your right, if I shave on a regular basis, it clears off a lot of the dead skin and keeps the hairs from trapping oil. But unfortunately, if I have any acne in and around my beard, shaving just makes it scar like no other. I mean, if I hit the acne with the razor, I'm gonna have a flat red mark for a month or more. It sucks man :frown:

I went on a low-dose course of accutane. I used to get 5+ pimples a day on my face, it ruined my confidence/gave me severe depression. Now, I'm about 4 months into accutane and I haven't had a SINGLE pimple in about 3 weeks. I haven't really had any bad side effects since I took a low dose.

If you're scared of going on the accutrain, go for a high dose of vitamin A. It has a very high success rating and is very similar structurally to accutane. You'll need to take about 100k - 200k IU of vitamin A a day. It sounds like a lot, but it isn't bad at all. Ask your doctor to look up some studies on it and they'll advise you on the dose.

Hmm, I'll definitely look into that. You can literally just take high amounts of a vitamin A supplement?

Yes. I firmly believe that acne's root cause is from vitamin A deficiency. I mean, vitamin A is right there next to a cure for acne. If a vitamin cures an illness, doesn't that make it a deficiency? Skin care companies make loads of money selling bogues treatments, this is why you don't see any commercials for vitamin A. Too easy to produce and not as lucrative as hyped-up skin creams.

In the study I read, 95% of acne sufferers had ZERO lesions at the end of the course. I recommend reading a few studies on PubMed and replicating the procedures.

Seriously, vitamin A fixes the root cause of acne, it drastically lowers the levels of sebum that your skin produes. Sebum is a wonderful breeding ground for P. Acnes. Imagine you on a 1 mile wide bed with 1000s of beautiful women. That's like what sebum does for the P. acne bacterium. You take that huge bed and all those beautiful women away, and no more babies.

I can vouch for the vitamin A and it's effect on my skin. I had horrible acne as a teen and took accutane to clear it up. After that I would drink carrot juice if I was having a flare up. I feel the carrot juice made my skin "brighter" and helped to quell the flare up.

Vitamin A at very high levels can be toxic. The beta-carotene in carrots is converted into vitamin A in the liver, with a much lower chance of toxicity. Vitamin A is fat soluble so, take with fat in a meal.

Vitamin A is also used in some skin preparations.

Idk about vitamin A and accutane (I was offered, but decided not to go that route), but there is research suggesting that acne sufferers have lower levels of Vitamin E. Some products, like those containing benzoyl peroxide, will deplete your skins reserve of that vitamin (and possibly others, I would assume).

I started using a vitamin e oil topically (it's really heavy, though, so I use sparingly) and saw a decrease in my breakouts after a couple weeks. I was also put on clindomycin topical gel and started exercising regularly and changed up my eating habits. I notice that if I eat certain foods (like French fries) or get shitty sleep or am über-stressed, I'll have a guaranteed breakout the next few days. It should be noted that I've had breakouts for the past few years and I'm finally getting to the point where I'm okay with my skin.

It probably wouldn't hurt to see if you're deficient in any nutrients, OP.

Eat foods high in vitamin a and & e. It can only help.

Tomatos are great for vitamin a, nuts are great for vitamin e.

Also things like baby spinach and some salads have great vitamin content for A & C. You need to eat it with some fatty foods to really absorb the fat soluble vitamins like vitamin A though.

Greasy foods don't cause acne and the evidence demonstrates this. Last year, I never ate fast good and I had terrible skin. This year, I eat fast good almost every day and my skin is next to completely clear.

Don't get me wrong, eating fast food regularly will cause many health problems, but acne is not one of them.

Seriously, if you suffer from acne you are most likely deficient in vitamin A.
