Yeah your right, what should they be thankful for? Thankful that someone who didn't really have many other options or has a "call of duty" attitude. Most people don't even agree with the wars, most of them vets. These people think they deserve a pat on the back, for what, for getting paid and having lifelong benefits paid out of our pockets? What do they think they were doing over there? Saving American lives and protecting our freedoms? The whole war is bullshit not even speaking about the money we wasted paying these men and rebuilding hospitals, schools and  mosques they bombed. Following orders given by evil men doesn't earn you respect.

A patriot- a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion.

B mercenary- working or acting merely for money or other reward; venal.

What sounds more fitting?

Just the other day a guy came into a store I was at with a younger guy in uniform sitting down waiting. He looked him in the eye, shook his hand and said 'thank you for your service".  Seemed very sincere to me. The military guy seem to think so too because you could tell it perked him up a bit.

The world needs more people who are mindful be being respectful to others. It seems the trend now a days (for both young and old) is me me me.

most people cant tell us what uniform the terrorists wear, probably
something less conspicuous than a regular army uniform, I could be
wrong but I bet it looks something like civilian clothes which
could give rise to this claim that we've killed so many civilians,
I'm also sure that sites like Iraq Body Count doesnt help much when
they list 'all violent deaths' as being caused by the US and those
deaths include fatal car wrecks, terrorist attacks and fundie
islamists stoning their own children for breaking allah's laws

what is anyone supposed to do when they are told that they need to thank the men and women (though that's already going to far!1) whom have fought for their country and freedoms? they're told everyday to lie. don't blame them for not really giving a fuck at this point, and lying through their teeth. it's just what they are TOLD to do.

I'm indifferent on the whole subject, fighting an unjust war isn't exactly endearing but many soldiers apparently have/had good intentions at least. As far as people enlisting solely for the benefits, sometimes there isn't much other choice if you want to live the "American dream".

WW2 and the Revolutionary War are the only wars this country has fought that I would support on principle. For everything else I'm against the war and indifferent towards those tricked into fighting it.

Nobody was tricked.  You disapprove of the Civil War?  Do you know what happened to the people of S Vietnam after we abandoned them.  Do you think it would be a good thing if S. Korea looked like N. Korea?  Do you support the Taliban?  How about Saddam Hussein, if only on environmental criminal grounds?
