Once again I’ve been blessed with another incredible year in my life - Afghanistan. Say no more. The word itself conjures images of mystic, poverty and warfare. Believe me I saw it all.
The job turned into an absolutely amazing experience. The experience was a man called Nazari. Nazari is about 60 and has been involved with many government departments during his illustrious career.
My brief with the company was to look after all their government problems, be they tax, military, border, work permit, visas or security. No mean task when we had over 1000 employees and serviced some 12,000 ISAF troops. Nazari was my right hand man.
Why did I leave. Well it’s getting pretty hairy in Afghanistan. We survived a rocket attack that landed 5 metres behind our guesthouse at 3 in the morning. A week later, a bomb went off 300 metres from us that killed 12. And the daily travel up and down Jahalabad Road which at one stage was being hit daily by suicide bombs.
Well it’s off to a new adventure next year. North Eastern Congo. Should be a interesting new chapter.
Tuk [Ed's Thai Wife of more than 30-years] and I wish you all the very best for the new year. May you be safe, be happy and most of all – look after yourselves. I’ll try too.
Shit, I cannot figure out how to get the images form the word file sent to me so I can post them with this text.
