What they really mean is "better you than me". I mean, where did this phrase originate? I know you don't give a shit about them, so why the need for the reminder?

I much rather enjoy the company of citizens, the ones who stand square, look a grunt in the eye and say "Welcome Home".

"Welcome Home" is polite and respectful, regardless if its Korea/Vietnam vet or OFI/OEF.

"Thank you for your service" is  asking for trouble.

trust me on this.

I never miss a chance to thank a vet for their service.  I know I appreciated it when I was in the service all those years ago.

I concur. Whenever I hear it though I can feel who's sincere and who is just paying lip service.

Would you prefer them to not say anything? At least they give the minimum.

I'll thank WW2/Vietnam vets, but everyone else, I don't think we should even be overseas, I'm not going to thank them for that. I'm not going to support injustice. We've killed more civillians than terrorists over there. Fuck that.

if someone isn't sincere or is ambivalent, than silence is best. That way nobody is forced into awkwardness or says something they don't mean.

Pay is a separate issue.

I take umbrage with those who say "thank you" but really couldn't give a shit. The war for them was just something that interrupted American Idol or Greys Anatomy.

What is your criteria to differentiate between people that are genuine with the remark and people who aren't?

I hope not, but usually when I hear "thank you" its offered half heartedly. I want to be wrong on this. I want to believe in the wholesome and genial Americans, but their a dying breed.
